Graduation activity at San Marino schools marks year end

The San Marino community held a June graduation ceremony for the Henry E. Huntington School eighth graders. DAR and American Legion awards were presented to top students. The event featured “The California Gold Centennial” theme, with Dr. P. Martin Baker delivering the invocation and Miss Edrys Nagle presenting diplomas.

Special Events Planned For Huntington School Playground

Huntington School playground hosts summer programs under C C Howard. Activities include model airplane building archery boat clubs photography rowing and equestrian clubs for local youths. Teen dances for 8th to 11th graders run Wednesday 7 30 to 10 30 at Huntington School gym registration begins Monday at 9 AM with hours posted June 1 there.

Pomona College Elects Wig President of Board

Rudolph J. Wig of 905 Avondale Road and vice-president of Kelco Company Los Angeles was elected president of the Pomona College board of trustees at the annual meeting. He succeeds Frank H. Harwood of San Dimas who had served as president since 1929 and was elected vice-president, filling the vacancy created by Wig’s elevation.

Southwestern Military Academy 24th Commencement Honors California

Southwestern Military Academy observed its 24th commencement at Lincoln Hall and on 2800 Monterey Road. The program titled California Our Golden State commemorated California’s gold discovery centenary with patriotic readings, music by the academy orchestra, bugler calls, and a finale of I Love You California. Major Maurice Veronda greeted graduates as relatives looked on.

Hertrich Speaks at San Marino Kiwanis Meeting

Wil liam Hertrich curator emeritus Huntington Botanical Gardens spoke to San Marino Kiwanis Tuesday noon at Harry Raymond's. He described plant collection beginnings development and acquisition of 50 000 plants from 7 000 to 8 000 species. He illustrated with color film. The program was arranged by Lyle Wright.

Daumier Lithographs Exhibit Opens At Huntington Library

The Huntington Library hosts a Daumier display tracing 1853 to 1865 works from Charivari and Caricature journals. Highlights include Robert Macaire cartoons and Rue Transnonain, drawn during Louis Philippe era satire. The show features about 2000 Daumier lithographs from Frank Rinder’s collection, prepared by W A Parish. Exhibition hours 1 to 4 30 daily except Mondays, with advance reservations by mail or phone.

Girl Scout Day Camp Plans Being Completed

Brownies and Intermediate Scouts will attend a day camp at Lacy Park on multiple July dates from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration calls go to Mrs. Howard G. Smits. A staff workshop led by Mrs. Wayne Hampton is set for June 21 and 24 at the Boy Scout House in Lacy Park.

Residents Call for Automatic Signals at Los Robles Mission Crossing

After a serious June incident injuring Ricky Crane at the Los Robles and Mission intersection residents demand immediate stop and go automatic signals. A council delegation led by Mrs Frances Andrew urged action, noting frequent rolling stops and nightly traffic snarls. The council instructed the police chief to investigate safety improvements and a petition with over 500 signatures is expected for the next meeting.

Freeman Receives Navy Commission at UC Berkeley

Robert John Freeman was sworn into the United States Navy by President Truman during UC Berkeley commencement on June 14. At 21, Freeman earned honors in a demanding engineering program as part of the university’s largest graduating class, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Condit Freeman of 2230 Homet road.

Kenneth Good Appointed to West Point Cadet

Kenneth Newton Good 17, son of Kenneth J. Good of San Marino, was named a principal candidate for admission to the U S Military Academy at West Point from California. He will report July 1, leaving June 26 for New York, after graduating this week from South Pasadena San Marino High School. He earned the Life Award in Boy Scouts Troop 2 and played football basketball and baseball in school.

Fall Injures Girl Tripping Over Construction Wire

Wendy Rockwell four years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas A Rockwell suffers a deep gash below the knee after tripping over a wire on a construction lot. She was taken to Dr Hanson for treatment after the incident Saturday night on Woodlawn Avenue.

Ricky Crane Doing Swell After Accident

Little Ricky Crane who was struck by a car at Los Robles and Mission last week is recovering at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Head bandages are removed, he cannot sit up due to a broken leg, and his pediatrics ward is filled with toys puzzles and coloring books to keep him happy.

Bank Buys Adjoining Stores For Expansion

Security First National Bank announced that it has purchased the 32 foot store next to its San Marino branch at Huntington Drive and San Marino Avenue. Local manager Paul Cunningham said the property will be incorporated into existing quarters within the year to allow for a larger Senadies program.

San Marino Council Denies Brooks Variance On Lot Frontage

At a City Council meeting opposition grew against Cleat and Esther Brooks variance for 22 feet frontage on Pasqualito drive lot one to allow two houses. Citizens voiced concerns over precedents, minimal lot sizes, and preserving the lot as one beautiful wooded property. The vote was unanimous to deny the petition as council favored maintaining a single home on the lot. The story also notes the bank’s acquisition of a store room leased to Sprouse-Reitz through July 31, 1949, with plans to expand the bank’s offices by nearly 3,000 square feet and improve facilities.

San Marinan Leaves For International Engineering Meet

Paul Baumann of 1808 Palmas drive leaves next Saturday by air for Holland and Switzerland to attend the Second International Conference on Soil Mechanics in Rotterdam from June 21 to 29 as a representative of the United States. He will visit Switzerland to inspect Alpine dam construction and return in late July. Baumann is Assistant Chief Engineer of the Los Angeles County Flood Control District.

First Lady Quiet Call On San Marino Friends

Mrs Truman and her daughter Margaret made an informal doorstep visit at 465 Plymouth Road San Marino delivering a moment of surprise and happiness to Mrs Benjamin Bee Miss Jessie McDearmon and families. The Trumans later briefly greeted seen visitors at Pasadena on the same day.
