Five Huntington graduates win American Legion and D.A.R. awards announced at two assemblies. Names include Frederic DeHaven Byers Jr. and Nancy Joy Ewing. The event accompanies the largest eighth grade class diploma ceremony at Henry E. Huntington School with 186 graduates.

Mrs. Neil Burton and her son Peter stopped to help two distressed kittens near a drain pipe on San Marino avenue. The kittens bit both hands during the rescue, prompting a visit to the San Marino police station. Police sent the felines to the San Gabriel Humane Society for checkup and Pasadena Emergency Hospital treated bitten fingers.
Assemblyman Montevil A. Burke announced thanks to San Marino supporters after securing a clear majority on both Republican and Democratic tickets in the primaries. He praised friends for their hours of effort and assistance in the election.
Services were held at 1 p.m. at the Little Stone Church of Turner Stevens and Turner in Alhambra for Ellis C. Bragg 54 who died after a heart attack. Interment was at Angelus Abbey Mausoleum in Compton. Bragg owned women s apparel stores in San Marino Alhambra and Temple City and lived with his wife at 630 West Roses Road San Gabriel. He helped buy and expand the Krause Department Store into three areas and supported local civic groups including Rotary Club Chamber of Commerce Granada Masonic Lodge and the Alhambra Elks Club. He previously worked 15 years for Buffum s Department Store in Long Beach and earned the nickname Spike as a Sey mour Iowa High School track star. He leaves his wife daughter two sisters two brothers and a nephew.
Private services were held for Fred Liebhardt who died Saturday morning June 10 from a heart attack. He and his wife Louise Dodge, a former South Pasadena resident, had lived in San Marino and since eight years in Denver and Ouray Colorado where he mined. He leaves his widow, a son and daughter in law Fred Liebhardt Jr and Marianne Arnett of South Pasadena, and two grandchildren Allanna and Fritz, all of La Jolla.
The Chattie Club of San Marino Community Church announces free summer film nights at Lacy Park near the Virginia road entrance. From June 20 to August 29, Tuesdays at 8 pm will feature color educational spots, a comedy, and the serial Clancy of the Royal Mounted starring Tom Tyler and Jacqueline Wells. An offering will cover film rental costs. Chattie members and Deacons assist as projectionists.
The San Marino Garden Club held its final meeting at the Burke residence on Bedford Road. Retiring president Mrs. Charles E. Atkins passed the gavel to incoming president Mrs. Harold E. Dryden. The executive board and officers were installed with a flower basket ceremony.
The Sunny Slope Water Company lost an appeal to complete a new reservoir tank in the El Campo district. General manager Clyde Wesson says the company will fight to a finish. The partially completed tower, over 70 feet high, is considered unsightly by neighbors. The company may sue the regional planning commission that granted the permit, though attorneys say the supervisors stand by their revocation.
The San Marino council orders about 600 metal street name signs to standardize names with blue backgrounds and white letters. Signs will be eight feet tall on metal posts after bids were opened at the Wednesday meeting amid long standing complaints about worn or illegible curb painted names.
Suzanne Copp died June 11 in San Bernardino. Services were held at Kremer Funeral Home in San Bernardino. She is survived by daughter Betty Jane Reed of Denver and another daughter, plus a brother in Philadelphia and a sister in Waynesburg. She was a member of Anaheim Chapter OES.
A new post office substation serving the Chelsea Huntington drive business section is proposed. Postmaster Fred G. Sutherland of Pasadena seeks bids from at least three business houses with a June 19 deadline. Proposals will go to Los Angeles postal authorities for review and recommendation.
Fire unit rushed to 2424 Huntington Drive when a circulating fan motor overheated. Faulty insulation caused the motor to overheat though electrical circuits were shut off before any fire started. San Marino Fire Department responders cleared the scene after assessing the incident.
At a San Marino Kiwanis luncheon held at Harry Raymond's, Dr. Howard J. Seifert of Caltech showcased a microbe projector that magnified objects such as salt crystals and feathers. The device, built by Seifert, revealed intricate designs and life in a miraculous display. Co-worker Al Sommerfield introduced the scientist, while Ken Springer of Fuller Paints was slated to discuss the topic next week.
San Marino’s Percy Cowherd real estate building at 2124 Huntington Drive is demolished after 20 years in that location and 6 years at the previous corner. A new modern commercial building will rise with three stores, parking for 10, and completion expected around August 1.
San Marino faces ongoing rent decontrol tension as the local Rent Control Advisory Board 12 rejects a postponement while housing expeditor Tighe E. Woods holds firm. Neighbors Alhambra South Pasadena and Pasadena have decontrol, Arcadia already freed, while San Marino residents urge full decontrol arguing rental rules are unnecessary for the city’s elite.
Five year old James Gossett and friend Allen Burguer investigated a car in a yard at 2715 Lorain road. Gossett opened the driver door and released the brake causing the car to roll back and strike Allen against a fence. Allen was bruised but not seriously hurt and the boys decided to leave driving to adults.
James A. Nicklen of 970 Darby Road has been named City Attorney of Arcadia. He replaces T. Guy Cornyn who resigned after four years of service to the City Council.
More than six hundred seniors are expected to graduate today at two ceremonies in San Marino and South Pasadena. South Pasadena High and San Marino High will host separate commencement events this afternoon to mark the students’ final bow.
South Pasadena-San Marino High School announces senior and junior high honors. Seniors including Sam Morley Charles DesBrisay Janet Hodgkinson Gary Harvey Richard Armstrong Jerry Rule Donna McKenzie Alyce McIntosh and others win scholarships to Stanford Vassar Dartmouth Pomona Redlands Whittier and Occidental. Also Douglas Young earns a four year scholarship to Pepperdine. Commencement features security themed addresses by George Wright Alice Robb Janet Hodgkinson and Margery Klopsch, with diplomas to be presented by Maurice Jones Jr. and ceremonies on Roosevelt Field and in the junior high auditorium.
Four foreign exchange students will visit San Marino Rotary Club including Audrey Babakhanian of Tehran a Pepperdine music major and Vahan Manuelian of Tehran USC student sponsored by Temple City Rotary. They will present folk dances and speeches with other speakers Fred Chel Rotterdam and Elizabeth Malak Jerusalem.
A new three storefront building is to be constructed at 2326 Huntington Drive costing $20,000 with completion targeted by August 1. Owners are Mrs N C Ranger and her daughter Muriel. Construction is underway.
City Clerk E Randall Kerr reports receipts from Southern California Gas for 94 and California Water and Telephone for 2527 as franchise payments for the period ending December 31 1949.
San Marino announces a Girl Scout Day Camp with sessions on June 20 21 22 27 28 29 and July 5 6 7 for girls entering grades three through five. Attendees should bring their own lunch and camp leaders include Mrs Alfred C C Ross R C Barrett and Elmer J Erickson.
