San Marino seeks voter approval on Ordinance 470 joining the State Employees Retirement System for city employees. Petitioners report broad support among residents and police and fire personnel, requiring 710 signatures by June 24 to place the issue on the ballot, possibly in November.
Den 5 of Cub Scout Pack 3 raised nine dollars through weekly five cent contributions over time. By unanimous vote the group sent the sum to the Sister Kenny Foundation to aid polio fight. Members listed include Bobby Douglas, Bobby J Garrett, Donald Norberg, Douglas Norberg, Brock Robertson, Fletcher Brownlee and Eddie Wais.
A voter called Tuesday asking for her polling place and sample ballot but received no information from authorities. The piece notes failure to explain primary election laws and recalls a past clerk who refused party affiliation questions. The San Marino Community Council heard an interim report from the Youth Activities Coordinating Committee. A survey of 5th to 12th graders and youth group leaders showed most clubs lack local centers and summer programs, with activities including Scouts, school clubs, music and dancing lessons.
Graduation events fill mid June with record 186 eighth graders at Henry E. Huntington School. Trustees Maurice Jones Jr and Robert Treuer will hand out diplomas as the eighth grade chorus sings under Kenneth White. Awards include American Legion and DAR honors kept secret until announced.
City plans repaving from west city line to El Molino Avenue will start after the July 4 holiday. At May City Council, six bids were received and referred to the engineering department. lowest bid Atwood-Pursell at 13175 is expected to win. Performance contracts will follow the June 14 meeting to begin after holiday traffic subsides.
Scouts in San Marino collected about 90 tons of newspapers and magazines last Saturday. The effort should raise around 500 dollars for Scout Troops Cub Packs and Explorer Posts. Nearly 490 Scouts explorers Cubs and dads took part in loading and collection.
Brownie Scouts and families will meet at Lacy Park on Saturday June 10 for their annual Brownie Revel. Families are invited to bring a picnic lunch and participate in a flag ceremony and the Juliette Low Fund collection. The program includes songs and international games and dances concluding around 2 30.
The County Board of Supervisors denied Sunnyslope Water Company appeal to continue construction of a half finished tank near San Gabriel Boulevard and Lombardy Road. The Planning Commission ordered all work stopped and revoked the original permit.
Two tap till artists robbed a clerk at Howard Hardware 2970 Huntington Drive last Friday afternoon taking 35 dollars. One suspect dropped change to distract while the other reached into the till. Police note the scam has targeted Monrovia Pasadena and San Marino merchants and warn others to beware.
San Diego police arrest a young couple, Jacqueline and Billy Hussey, who confess to a string of robberies including the May 5 burglary of Col. Walter C. Fain in San Marino. About $1900 in jewelry and clothing were taken. The pair were nabbed while pawning a watch. Mrs Hussey says she pawns goods worth $2600 monthly. Captain Edward Norwine led the questioning in San Marino and secured the confession. The Husseys, on parole from North Carolina, are sought by police in Mississippi, Oregon and Texas.
In San Marino the great voter turnout sent Governor Warren and Richard Nixon to win both party nominations. Hillings defeats Wheeler by 598 votes while Smith leads Cherniss for township justice. Burke dominates assembly race with 4004 votes, MacDonald 374, Bryant 293.
A special meeting of the Historical Society of Southern California opens the Huntington Library exhibit A Century of California Literature. The event, part of the California Literary Centennial, features works from the library and honors the California frontier as a source of distinctive regional writing. The proceedings were led by Dr Robert A Millikan with remarks from Joseph R Knowland J Gregg Layne and Gustave O Arlt. Librarian Leslie E Bliss welcomed attendees. The Tribune also provides precinct results from the local election for context.
San Marino Post 239 plans its annual spring party at the San Gabriel Country Club on Friday June 9. The event features professional entertainers a putting contest before dinner at 7 p.m. and numerous door prizes. This is the post’s final meeting until September and a large turnout is expected.
