Nixon outlines progress as Congress, public press clash

At a Town House Cafe dinner in San Gabriel more than 200 citizens and leaders heard Congressman Richard Nixon report on budget, taxes, labor and un American activities. He defended a non rubber stamp Congress and pledged to cut the national debt and services. He warned of a Democratic administration and a pro propaganda campaign while noting labor and anti labor issues. He cited John L Lewis and the Workingman's Bill of Rights. Valentine Elevated to State Chamber Regional Vice President

Edward R. Valentine of 2035 El Moline Street was elected as Southern California's regional vice-president of the California State Chamber of Commerce, announced by President Harry A. Mitchell. A Stanford graduate, Valentine holds multiple posts including vice-president and director roles at Fullerton Oil Company and serves on several boards such as the Los Angeles Community Welfare Federation and the Automobile Club of Southern California.

High School Outstanding Award Winners at Pasadena Jamboree

South Pasadena San Marino High School collected the most honors at the Pasadena Star News Sports Jamboree held at the Civic Auditorium on May 28. Pat Shea accepted the Foothill League football plaque, while George Linsdley and Wayne Tucker received basketball honors and Russ Kiernan with Don Patterson took the tennis plaque. Wayne Tucker was named outstanding athlete. Bob Garrett and Patricia Jinings earned junior high spirit trophies for schools without competitive programs.

Girl Scouts Assured Funds For Addition

San Marino Community Council directors pledged 6700 for a new addition to the Girl Scout cabin on Alhambra Road. Harold E. Dryden said the funds cover construction and extra furniture for the troops using the cabin.

Mrs. Mary P. Graham, wife of Edward S. Graham Jr., is reported in satisfactory condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital after being thrown from her car on Linda Vista Street. Her vehicle struck the curb then hit a light standard, fire alarm box, an oak tree, and a traffic sign near the Holly street bridge. Her account could not be obtained due to injuries.

Philharmonic Group Announces Five Concert Series

P Orwell Lieberg president of the San Gabriel Valley Philharmonic Artists Association says five concerts will be staged for the 1947 48 season at Alhambra High School Auditorium. LA Philharmonic Orchestra under Alfred Wallenstein will appear three times on November 29 January 10 and March 7. A Bartlett Robertson dual pianist concert and Mia Slavenska Ballet Variante are also on the lineup. Mrs. Davidson Resigns Library Trusteeship

Alexander Davidson of 1305 Circle Drive resigned from the Public Library board of trustees. The formal letter read at an adjourned City Council meeting accepted with regret. Postal Receipts Show Small May Increase

May postal receipts rose six percent to 5984 dollars from 5660 dollars a year earlier. Superintendent John M Carroll released figures noting sales volume fell during the month due to a sharp drop in overseas mailings.

Exhibit of Mark Twain Works Opens at Huntington Library

Dogs Nip Two Carriers Bite Mark in Pasadena

The local post office reports two mail carriers bitten in separate attacks this week. Marcus Helmey was bitten on Cumberland road near 2400 block and Claude E Hill Jr. was attacked on Lorain road. Both finished routes and sought treatment at Pasadena Emergency Hospital.

San Francisco Cable Car Crash Injures Local Visitor

Mrs. William A. Davis of 2195 Lorain road suffered serious injuries when a San Francisco cable car derailed on Washington street. She was jolted from the car and narrowly avoided losing a leg, then taken to Central Emergency Hospital in critical condition. Neighbors say her condition is improving and she is expected to remain hospitalized for some time.

Paul Bradley of 735 La Mirada sustained a severe injury to his right foot last Thursday when a power saw fell from a bench at a home under construction on 1745 Bedford road. The saw was still powered when it struck his foot.

Dr. Baker Celebrates Sixth Anniversary at San Marino Church
