Before an audience of 250 adults at Huntington School auditorium last Monday evening Gerald Brennan Bob Constans and Donald Patton received Eagle Scout Badges the highest scouting award. The ceremony highlighted merit badge and advancement honors.
Eagle badges and rings were presented to new Eagles by retiring San Marino district commissioner F. S. Sut phin and sponsor representatives Maurice Jones Jr. John Barton and Roswell Allison. Life Scout, Star Scout, Second Class, First Class and Merit Badge awards were given to numerous Scouts across Troops 1 through 5 by district officials and sponsors.
Chief Glenn McClung announced the appointment of two new police officers to replace resignations. Willard Newton of Pasadena and Robert Marlett of Wilmar join the force, replacing Durbin and Stock who left San Marino. The June 10 Special bond election was postponed to a fall date after city council action and legal review.
Echoes of the convention at Santa Cruz sparked recent Soroptimist Club of San Marino discussions. Local delegates Grace Axtman and Kay Abelson shared a delightful trip filled with convention activities. South Pasadena joined the San Marino Soroptimist district and Viola Glaister and Lillian Halloway were initiated after lunch at Joy's Inn with Frances McGowan presiding.
More than 100 Republican men and women attended a potluck dinner Tuesday at the home of Edward L. Emmetts on Virginia Road. Inclement weather kept the gathering indoors but did not dampen enthusiasm as Mrs. Roy Ensign opened the meeting and Boyd Gibbons Jr. introduced speakers Mr. and Mrs. Tony Whan who spoke on business leaders in politics and on new voters in the area.
A Memorial Day tribute urges renewed resolve to carry on the fight for peace justice and equality. It recalls Bataan Corregidor Guadalcanal sacrifices and stresses comforting veterans families and disabled buddies while rededicating to bind up the nation s wounds and pursue a better world.
George F Staat of Southwest Academy will earn his A B degree cum laude on June 14 as part of USC commencement in the Coliseum. He entered USC in 1925 and, while working as a math instructor since 1943, pursued 22 years of University College studies to support his family and his varied career.
Guy Lauderbaugh of 1006 Huntington Drive was elected president of the San Gabriel Jewelers Association last week. Earlier he was re elected a director of the California State Jewelers Association.
The Huntington Library debuts new exhibits with Mark Twain letters on display from June 2 for Friends of the Library and guests, then to the public June 3. Gifts include 40 early Grabhorn Press impressions, bringing prior totals to 90 percent of the press's output, plus a William Blake water color title-page. Mr and Mrs Keith Ferguson proprietors of Joy's Inn on Huntington drive announce the birth of a son on Monday May 26 at St Luke's Hospital. It is the couple's first child.
San Marino Girl Scouts close the year with Field Day at Lacy Park on Saturday June 7. Events run 2 30 to 5 30 with a picnic supper and a Court of Awards after badges and ranks are announced. Susan Lundy Troop 3 serves as mistress of ceremonies with Suzanne Leonardson Troop 27 as color bearer and Valerie Moore Betsy Brigham as color guard.
Dr. Glenn Allan Millikan son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Millikan of 1640 Oak Grove avenue died after a mountain climbing accident near Spencer Tennessee. Funeral plans were not available but interment was expected in the East. He leaves widow Claire Mallory Millikan and three sons George Richard and Mark and two brothers Clark B. Millikan and Max F. Millikan.
Dr. David Gray pastor of the Oneonta Congregational Church of South Pasadena gave a Memorial Day address on living present memory and hope. Wayland A. San Marino business man spoke on memories that bless and burn. Alfred Allen earned a promotion on the club bulletin editorial staff. A surprise program is planned for Tuesday June 3 with member participation.
Memorial Day weekend closures noted with Friday holiday and Saturday observance varying by area. City delivery suspended except for perishable and special parcels while most businesses in San Marino stay closed for a two day break for employees.
Announcement at South Pasadena San Marino High School lists nine scholarships for San Marino students. Princeton grants went to A Gordon Picket Langthorne Sykes and Donald Dike. Stanford scholarship awarded to Mary Hice.
A city council huddle after a council meeting backs a special election to fund cultural and recreational advances for the youth. The proposed vote date is October 14 after summer vacation, though no formal action is taken yet until the proposal is presented to the City Council.
