San Marino Public Library will compile and preserve an oral history of the area using taped reminiscences from prominent citizens. City librarian Jane E Bayless and Friends of the Library members plan workshops and seek cooperation from early settlers and local officials to document local history.

A $190000 donation from 1937 Pomona alum and Monterey resident Carlton M Rogers was announced at a Pasadena testimonial for Earl J Merritt. The grant funds a new practice field on the Pomona campus named for Merritt, plus lighting for Alumni Field, five women’s tennis courts, and five men’s tennis courts including an amphitheatre court with hillside seating.

Pasadena trustees back separate junior college district

San Marino Board of Education was told Pasadena trustees favor forming a separate junior college district board. The Pasadena board agreed to consider asking voters to amend the city charter to allow a separate board for a junior college, though no commitment was made. Superintendent Walter Dingus called it a step in the right direction and sought statements from both the Pasadena board and city leaders on whether the issue would go to a public vote.

David S. Kratzer son of Dr and Mrs Harold E Kratzer of Santa Anita avenue accepts a call to the Brazilian mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints He will be honored in the Pasadena Stake House on June 13 report to the Mission Home in Salt Lake City on June 14 then to Brigham Young University for a Portuguese language course and in September travel to Sao Paulo for a two year stay Kratzer is a 1964 San Marino High School graduate life member of the California Scholarship Federation Interact Service Club and recipient of the Rotary Service Above Self scholarship He has studied at Brigham Young University and is an Eagle Scout with the Duty to God Award and Bronze Palm.

A Rose avenue resident reported a holiday weekend theft from a garage. Stolen items include a car stereo graphics equipment amplifiers a movie projector and auto parts such as a steering wheel ignition and transmission. Police believe the theft occurred between Saturday May 29 and Tuesday morning while the Waade family was away. Value not yet estimated.

Former Cumberland Road resident leads NASA industry division

William Rieke, a former Cumberland Road resident, was sworn in as deputy associate administrator for industry affairs at NASA. He had been management administrator for NASA’s Manned Space division since last November after resigning as president of Loeckherd Aircraft International. He succeeds George Fridl Jr. and will oversee western operations from NASA’s Los Angeles office, plus procurement, labor relations, reliability and inventions.

May Building Boom in San Marino Lifts Valuation

Building activity in San Marino surged in May with a total valuation of 290 551 up from last May by 64 000 Three new residences added 158 000 to the May total and five month valuations reached 1 417 914 about 440 000 higher than the first five months of 1964 Permits for additions and alterations totaled 87 791 with four swimming pools valued at 15 000 and fences and walls adding 4 600.

Miniature Gardens Display At San Marino Library

City librarian June E Bayiess invites nature lovers to view miniature garden creations in the Fine Arts Room at the San Marino Public Library from June 1 to 5. The four San Marino Garden Club members are Mesdames Harvey Doerr Joseph Dobson Elmer Howlett and M L Banders. Some pieces use button-sized materials though most are larger than a needle point. Miss Bayless calls the display an inspiration.
