San Marino Recreation Department schedules a novice and competitive tennis tournament for June 19 at San Marino High School. Events include 9 am Novices Singles for 12 and under. 10 am 14 and under singles and doubles for boys and girls. No entry fee. Tournament director Paul Waterhouse. Prizes awarded to top three in each division.
Police report two more city trees stolen in San Marino last weekend. A 5.5 foot tree vanished from Lorain road parkway and a small tree from Adair street between Friday night and Saturday morning. Earlier, five trees were removed from Old Mill road, and park authorities noted sprinkler pipe damage and two bench seats at Lacy Park.
Approximately eight tires were reported stolen last weekend from a San Marino service station at 1120 Huntington Drive. Police say thieves cut through a lock and chain securing the tires to a rack, taking them sometime between last Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Sts Felicitas and Perpetua school held a Tuesday graduation for 45 eighth grade students in the parish church. Rt. Rev. Msgr. William Fox presented diplomas as parents and friends attended. Various school awards were bestowed including American Legion Medals, DAR medals, Youth Education Service plaques, Alpha Beta Phi cups, and Leadership Trophy.
Mrs. Eric G. Lane of Encino Road will become chairman of the San Marino American Red Cross July 1 after her election at the annual officers and directors meeting held at the San Marino Congregational Church. Lane has long served the local board in multiple roles and Red Cross service dates to World War II in Baltimore and Pasadena. Other officers elected for one year include Mrs. Ralph W. Jones, Mrs Harold E. Hollister, Mrs. H. Stafford Nye, and Mrs. William A Curne. The meeting also honored Herbert H. McCormick of the San Marino Tribune with a plaque for years of Red Cross support.
The San Marino Public Library will suspend the Four O Clock Story hour for the summer starting June 18. Beverly Saunders says older children can attend the 10:30 Friday morning session, now open to all ages with shorter fairy tales.
Grad Night tours of decorations will be held at the high school on June 16 from 5 30 to 9 p m and June 17 from 12 noon to 3 p m. Guests may attend only during these periods and will not be admitted at other times.
John H. Rousselot former Congressman from the 25th District spoke at the San Marino Republican Women's Club Luncheon at Miss Rosemary Bryant's home on Old Mill Road Tuesday. He warned that U S disarmament policy mirrors Khrushchev's UN speech proposing world disarmament under UN control and urged heightened public awareness of the threat to sovereignty and liberties.
The Board of Education approved several summer curriculum development sessions for San Marino teachers. Projects range from one to nine weeks, costing about 3500 dollars for salaries, with sessions for elementary social science, foreign language via closed circuit TV, boys physical education, and four high school subjects including English Algebra math AP French and language lab materials.
The Wreckers routed City Club 23 to 0 as Hal Ilennacy drove in seven and Blair Pascoe five. Scout Dads lead the San Marino Softball League at 6 0 while standings show Leftovers 4 2 Rough Riders 2 4 City Club 0 6 and Valley Club 0 6. A nightly schedule continues at Lacy Park with games every Tuesday Thursday and Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The San Marino High School pool opens Friday June 18 for recreational swimming from 1 to 5 30 p m with adults and children admission at 25 cents. Hours through the week: Monday Wednesday Friday 1 30 to 9 p m Tuesday Thursday Sunday 1 30 to 5 30 p m Locker rooms available starting June 21. Registration for lessons June 18 1 to 2 30 p m with optional pre tests.
San Marino High School honors 1965 CIF Champion tennis team at awards banquet. Brad Cornnell named varsity MVP and co captain star, most inspirational player. Lowell Chatburn and Dan Caldwell receive captain and junior varsity honors. Team posted 24 wins, four straight CIF titles, six in seven years.
San Marinans plan to attend Los Angeles County budget hearings opening today as the first billion dollar budget faces scrutiny. Taxpayer groups led by Taxaction Inc push back against proposed salary hikes and tax increases, with hearings set to run through Friday and Monday if needed. George C. Jordan of Altadena, Taxaction policy chair, cites more than 12 million in county salary raises as provocation.
The San Marino School Board approved a 4.05 percent overall pay increase for classified staff totaling $9439 with most going to custodial gardening and maintenance. Cafeteria raises total $3519 from the cafeteria budget while secretarial clerical pay scales were not raised. Superintendent Dingus noted no prior five year adjustment and said transportation plans depend on parent survey responses.
Sixteen receive Eagle and Life Scout honors at the San Marino area court of honor held Monday evening in Huntington. New Eagle Scouts include Randy Ewig Wesley Hampton James Marver Scott Neely Raymond Lee and Rick Derevan. Life Scout and Star Scout recognitions followed with multiple named recipients from Troops 352 353 354 356 and 355.
June 14 marks the 188th birthday of the American Flag. The piece notes its evolving appearance since 1777 yet unchanging symbolism of honor, justice, and freedom, urging defense of Old Glory either by muskets or missiles and promoting self determination, worldwide respect, and better conduct.
San Marino officials and community groups outline a weekend of celebration for Independence Day. The parade forms 4:30 pm at San Marino High School, proceeds to Lacy Park, with seniors honored at a Thursday awards assembly and graduation ceremonies set for 8 pm. Activities include a softball game, games for children, community sing, flag ceremony, and a 30 minute fireworks display pending Day Council approval. Local organizations provide decorations, entertainment, tables, and refreshments while residents bring their own food.
Huntington School eighth grade class members will hold their annual graduates picnic tomorrow from 2 to 6 p.m. at Cal Tech pool with swimming and games, followed by a spaghetti dinner in Tournament Park. A graduation dance will be held June 17 at the San Marino Woman's Club from 8 to 10 30 p.m.
San Marino based Troop 351 sponsored by the city club earned the presidential award at the 1965 Scout-O-Rama in Temple City. The San Gabriel Valley event drew over 20 000 scouts and featured displays by San Marino cub packs and explorer posts.
