Saline candidates for mayor and councilmen filled Reporter pages with statements on issues and city priorities. In the last two issues some candidates contributed essays, with more prepared material and vital statistics appearing elsewhere including page 14.
Mayor Jack Bennett, running for a third term, says the city shows a surplus between 35000 and 40000 dollars this fiscal year. He notes taxpayers paid six to seven mills too much in taxes and pledges a more realistic budget. He advocates full-time protection for Curtiss Park and Oakwood Cemetery, plus funding for a new Fire Hall and City Hall via bonding, with continued coverage on page 2.
Saline City Clerk Bill Muir is under medical treatment at Saline Community Hospital after being admitted Saturday afternoon.
The Kiwanis Club of Saline will hold Farmers Night at Walker's Bakery on Monday November 2. Dinner starts at 6 30 p.m. Robert Tefft is the program chairman for the evening.
A public hearing will be held at City Hall at 8 p.m. Monday November 16 on the rezoning of the Meha property.
Councilman George Johnson, a mayoral candidate, reviews past opinions and lists city work he wants: revise outdated ordinances, avoid tax increases, ensure tax dollars are spent wisely, start a reforestation program, and expand parks. He cites the city charter and periodic revision needs.
Saline councilman Robert Strohl urged a long term growth program to balance expanding population with economic development. He noted Saline’s growth will continue and called for attracting industry and supporting downtown small businesses with planning and infrastructure, including water and sewer lines. The gathering planned to discuss the plan further with refreshments at the school cafeteria.
Local election officials brace for a large turnout on Tuesday with a record wave of absentee ballots across Saline area townships. Saline reports 39, York 11, Pittsfield 80, and other towns show increases as voters await long lines. City Clerk E. J. Muir urges early voting to avoid delays and notes a two minute voting booth limit may be enforced if lines form. Absentee ballots are available until 2 pm Saturday.
Council candidate George Anderson lists public service roles in Saline Michigan: Recreation Commission 1963 Tax Board of Review 1964 Planning Commission appointment June 1964 Michigan Week General Chairman 1964 and board seat at Saline Area Business Development Corp. He emphasizes his civic background and study underway on zoning and cemetery ordinances.
Open house for parents of Intermediate School students scheduled Monday November 2. Parents will meet in the gym as Principal Dwight Reynolds gives a brief talk and distributes the evening schedules.
In the first week the Saline Area United Fund Drive reached five percent of its $13,095 goal. Drive chairman Buford Soden announced that about $650 had been raised, mainly from businesses. No residential district responses yet, though solicitations continue.
Saline candidate Hubert Beach calls for the City Council to set definite goals and govern by policy rather than day to day decisions. He argues past lapses harmed city direction and promises to work for Saline, even if making some people mad. He asks voters to support him on November 3.
The Saline Child Study Club met at the Sauk Trail Inn to mark the organization's 20th birthday. Past members and presidents attended, including Mrs. H. L. Engel and Mrs. John Schild, while hostesses were Mrs. Lee Robison and two others.
Saline Jaycees will act as special election precinct reporters for Network Election Service to speed up results from Michigan precincts. Chuck Lamberson announces members will call precinct results on the presidential gubernatorial and U S Senate races to NES' Detroit news hub at the Leland Hotel.
Harry Cogar, candidate for Saline City Council, issued a prepared statement stressing that voters prefer tangible results to campaign promises. He vows to work diligently for measures benefiting the majority and fairness, if elected, and asks for support on November 3.
Saline Chamber of Commerce will meet next Tuesday November 3 at 1 p.m. at Leutheuser's Restaurant. President Harry Parsons says the principal business is planning Christmas promotion events for Saline retailers.
The Rev George Laurent pastor of First Baptist Presbyterian Church was jailed in Magnolia Mississippi with about 30 others for trespassing and defying a court officer while aiding Negro voters to reach the county courthouse for registration The incident is part of a Civil Rights registration project supported by the National Council of Churches and United Presbyterian Church and has drawn praise and concern from supporters and locals alike.
