George Anderson candidate for a second term as city councilman cites many city problems with work started but not finished. He lists issues awaiting council action including reseeding Y reseed island on Harper and Tower Drive cleanup of wellfield and beautification sidewalk work on S Ann Arbor and park access fence at the disposal plant and sewer improvements plus downtown parking and council procedures. The Saline Area Republican Club schedules Gil Bursley Day on Tuesday October 20 with a noon luncheon at Leutheuser Restaurant and a state economy talk. George Meader Day follows Thursday October 22 with Meader at the Rotary Club meeting, coffee hours, a Bemis Road farm tour, and an 8 pm rally at Saline Savings Bank.
Saline candidate Hubert Beach argues for strict enforcement of building and subdivision ordinances and revision of certain provisions to curb past errors. He says sellers will come with affordable land and good schools, and concessions should target revenue generators, not high services or school costs.
Central Michigan University honored 20 Michigan school superintendents, including Leo L. Jensen of Saline, who retired after 21 years. The event at University Center featured Dr. Judson W. Foust as master of ceremonies and speaker Dr. Dwight Rich, former Lansing superintendent.
The intermediate school's annual maturation program screens two films for parents only at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the school gym. Dr. Rudenz Douthat and Public Health Nurse Phyllis Smith will discuss the films and answer questions. The titles are It's Wonderful Being a Girl and From Boy to Man.
Rotarians attended the Saline Steer Club annual banquet Monday at the High School. Buyers of club steers were also invited guests.
Saline faces rising pressure for higher taxes says George Johnson candidate for mayor. Johnson, finishing his second term as councilman and budget and finance commissioner, argues tax increases are unjustified without full value for every tax dollar and urges wiser spending before any rise.
Mrs. Donald Schultz of 101 E Bennett Sr was treated at Saline Community Hospital for severe burns on her hands after she tried to extinguish a fire at home. Fire officials say an overheated furnace ignited a car pad near a register and steam burned her hands. She recovered and was discharged. Saline Fire Department extinguished the blaze with no serious house damage.
The Carl Curtiss property loses a beloved redbud estimated to be over 150 years old. The historic tree, a century landmark, died despite Curtiss efforts to save it and was removed this week drawing disappointment from outdoor devotees who traveled to view it in bloom.
Saline area volunteers prep for the 1964 United Fund drive with a kickoff banquet at the American Legion Hall. The goal is 13 025 dollars, nine percent higher than last year, to fund full agency requests. keynote speaker will be Mrs. Robert West of Saline.
Fair Board weighs relocating the Saline Community Fair from Henne Field to either Saline High School grounds or Farm Council at Pleasant Lake Rd. due to crowding and rising tent costs. A December 14 association meeting will air the decision. bus service and a shell project at Henne Field are also discussed.
Robert T. Hartman of Milan was chosen chief of staff at the Saline Community Hospital medical staff meeting. Fulton Taylor of Ypsilanti will serve as vice chief of staff and Georgine Steade of Ann Arbor is named secretary-treasurer. New terms begin immediately.
Armin Haeussler of 8665 Weber Rd. was selected as president of the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau board, succeeding Robert Tefft. Paul Geiger of Salem Township is named vice president. The board meeting followed a dinner for members and their wives at the Farm Bureau office.
Members at the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau annual meeting opposed extending the minimum wage law to farm labor and opposed tying a federal Medicare program to Social Security. They supported a state broad base flat rate income tax and a 12 month school year study for Michigan Farm Bureau along with land assessment protections for farms and several policy resolutions on taxes welfare and agricultural programs.
