Construction of the Henne Field band shell is halted until spring due to an $8,212 cost after steel beam needs raise the bill. Funds show $4,200 on hand and $5,200 subscribed, short of the revised total. School officials will seek public funds while acknowledging the shell may not be used this year.
Lucy Gregory of Radio Station WOTA will headline the Washtenaw County Federation of Women's Clubs program at Whitmore Lake Methodist Church on Monday speaking on The Changing Sound of Radio. Mrs. Roy Berry will preside. hostesses are Whitmore Lake members with registration at 1 pm. Saline clubs are represented in the county federation.
The Saline Junior Child Study Club moves to organize the 1965 March of Dimes campaign after a request from Washtenaw County director Mrs. Lewis Baker. The meeting discussed Mothers Must Grow Too with Mrs. William Law leading. Next meeting set for November 2. In city business, DPW officials Mike Strait and Harry Bishop were authorized to attend a sewage disposal operators school in Flint on October 27 and 28. The Luther League and Bethel Church youth group plan a hay ride October 10 at 8 pm.
Pittsfield Township farmer Andrew Campbell of 3930 Platt Rd. will leave October 18 for an exchange trip to Egypt. He travels under Farmers in World Affairs with State and Agriculture Department backing, organized by the National Grange and Farm Union. Campbell is one of nine Americans on the trip returning December 9. The group may visit other countries on the way home, though the exchange is with Egypt only. Campbell was chosen by Michigan Grange master William J. Brake. He recently learned of the trip after receiving many shots. In other news, City Council approved drainage plans for 37 Rolling Meadows No 1 lots, paving the way for building permits.
Guido Binda presented a rough sketch of the planned elementary school at the Saline Area Schools Advisory Council meeting. He discussed projected costs and the plans to hold the annual advisory council meeting on November 4.
The WSCS of Saline Methodist Church announces its annual smorgasbord supper at Saline High School on Saturday October 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. Kitchen committee includes Mrs. James Beal and others. Dining room duties handled by Mrs. Oscar Ferguson and Mrs. Harold Gage. publicity led by Mrs. Richard Cole and Mrs. Vern Osterhout. Tickets cost 1.75 for adults and 1 for children under 12.
City Clerk E. J. Muir announced a record 216 new registrations since the September primary. About 1,485 Salinians registered to vote for the November 3 election. New residents in Crestwood Knolls and Hollywood Drive areas led the surge.
City Councilman George G Johnson and City Attorney Alan Grossman met with the Federal Housing Authority in Detroit for 15 Crestwood Knolls homeowners. The dispute covers sanitary sewer work masonry and grading. FHA will send two inspectors to Sun2 to re check the subdivision. FHA officials were cooperative but cannot sanction the builder. The only recourse is to bar future financing with related firms. Many complaints have been corrected and only seven remain open in FHA files. Johnson to inform all complainants of the meeting details. The proper complaint process requires written notice to the builder and then FHA filing with the case number.
An exchange of used clothing for infants through 4th grade is set at Jensen Elementary on Thursday October 15. Parents should bring items to the all purpose room starting Wednesday October 14. Tickets are issued per item. leftovers go to Saline Area Social Services.
The Union Farm Bureau group will gather Thursday October 9 at 9 30 pm at the home of Mr and Mrs Daniel Klein for a local meeting.
Council appointed James Knight Jr to fill the unexpired term on the planning commission after Phyllis Douthat resigned. The council accepted her resignation with deep regret as she enrolls as a full time student at the University of Michigan and expects to complete her degree this year.
City Council unanimously approved hiring Architect Tivadar Balogh to assess whether City Hall can be renovated or if a new combined City Hall and fire hall is needed. Balogh said the study would take about five hours and a report will be submitted soon.
Mrs. Robert Starling reports the Cystic Fibrosis fund drive has reached about 2100 dollars with 520 from Saline door-to-door efforts and 35.40 from El-Rad's coffee hour. Contributions come from Universal Plastics welfare fund Junior Child Study Club and Saline Community Hospital Auxiliary as mail requests continue county wide. A car wash by Saline Jaycees at Community Ford is set for October 18 from 10 am to 5 pm with donations of 1.50 per car and a CF group meeting on October 28 at Saline Savings Bank community room open to the public.
Police this week reported the apprehension of two juveniles who entered a residence at 107 E Bennett St last week while the family was away and stole eight packages of cigarettes, $1.50 in pennies, and two pieces of cake. The case has been referred to juvenile authorities.
A MEHA section meeting is set at the MEA region III conference in Ann Arbor at 1 30 pm Friday October 16 in the east cafeteria of Ann Arbor High School. The two day MEA conclave runs October 15 and 16. Miss Ada Inglis MEHA board member chairs the MEHA section and Dr Dwight Rich MEA executive secretary will report on the retirement village progress. The section is open to the public.
The annual meeting of Saline Area Social Services Inc will be held Tuesday at 2914 Saline Ann Arbor Rd at 7 pm Grace Stierle hosts and invites all interested persons to attend.
Saline defeated Lincoln 20 to 0 as quarterback Neil Still connected with Jim Griffin on a 59 yard TD pass and Griffin later hauled in a 37 yard TD pass. Griffin returned a punt for 70 yards for Saline's third score with Still adding two points after extra totals.
