Saline honors Charles Uphaus memorial awards on history efforts

The Historic District Commission presented Saline Historic Preservation awards Tuesday night. The Saline Historical Society won top prize in senior organizational division for the Saline homes tour last year. Senior individual winner was Mrs. James Knight Sr for her Orange Risdon homestead history project. Tony Knight won junior individual honors for his study and correspondence with historians. The commission aims to make the event annual in spring.

Saline Council Debates Federal Funds and Budget Shifts

Saline City Council met late with a heated public hearing on federal revenue sharing and deliberated senior housing and merging Parks and Beautification Commissions. Saline Jaycees and Aux Earn State Honors in Lansing

Twenty nine Saline Jaycees and Auxiliary members attended the state convention in Lansing. The Saline group earned nine awards including an honorable mention for the service awards banquet and third place in community action. The Auxiliary took third in community service and third as Auxiliary of the Year. Don Fyall placed seventh in a spark plug contest among 9,000 entrants. Gerry Gerweck ranked in the top 25 in speak-up competition. Stan Kind was named Jaycee superstar for Auxiliary service, and Sandi Kind was named among the top three presidents in the state.

Poppy Days and Memorial Day Events in Saline

Poppy Days set May 19 20 and 21 in Saline with volunteers led by Mrs Dan Leveillee collecting donations for disabled veterans funds. Mayor George Anderson proclaims the three day event to honor sacrifices for freedom. Memorial Day parade plans include 9 30 a m gathering on N Harris St near Michigan Ave, with Sen Gilbert Burley as speaker and Chaplain Richard Weeden leading prayer. Police Stop Fight At Local Lounge In Saline Flashpoint

Saline police quelled a Saturday night fight at Thompson’s Lounge sparked by an arm wrestling contest. A plate glass window was broken amid the scuffle. Police also investigate tire theft on Clark Street and underage drinking at Mill Pond.

Board Denies Henry Street Exit for Peters Complex

Zoning Board of Appeals denied a Henry Street exit for Paul Peters' commercial complex at 203 W. Michigan Ave while granting a 60 space parking variance with trees required to screen the lot. Residents argued the rear exit would raise traffic, lower property values, flood basements, and harm streetscape. The project aims to attract medical labs, an ad agency, offices, a dress shop, and other shops to downtown Saline.

Saline Board Keeps Jim Bradley as 1977-78 Coach

Saline Area School Board unanimously rehires Jim Bradley as varsity boys basketball coach for 1977-78 on a one year probation with multiple evaluations. The board approves a tentative 4.83 million dollar budget and schedules a millage vote for June 13, while halving the summer program and canceling camps pending SA E negotiations.
