Saline students win University of Michigan scholarships

Three Saline youths Janice Lynn Austin James Hershel Janes and Beth Ann Volz are named Regents Alumni scholars among about 1000 Michigan high school seniors. Janice a National Merit honorable mention and band member aims for law. Hershel Jones active in church and NHS plans ministry. Beth Volz active in music and student government pursues general study.

FFA Seeks Pay Hike for Fair Work

The Future Farmers of America at Baline High School proposed hourly pay rates for Saline Fair work, from 3 dollars to 50 cents, with half the total going to FFA treasury. The fair board offered 1125 dollars per hour to be shared between the workers and the FFA, and similar terms to other student groups.

Ford Plant Drives Saline Tax Hike and Budget Jump

Saline’s assessed valuation leaped to 27.0 million dollars due to the Ford plant, while millage dropped to nine mills. The general operating budget rises to 576,037 dollars with a new 24 hour police service plan and higher department costs, including fire hall bonds and equipment. The May 15 public hearing will consider the larger spending package.

No Interruption in Washtenaw County Drain Work

County Drain Commissioner John H. Flook will undergo vascular surgery at University Hospital on Thursday. He states that the multi million dollar drainage program will not be delayed and that Mrs. Agnes Turner will handle communications with Murray J. Knowles and Chester Pierce providing engineering and legal guidance. No extra county cost. Major projects include Saline Relief Drain 1 Saline River Drain and Bridgewater Drain 2.

Saline Jaycees Sweep Regional Honors in Battle Creek

Sixteen Saline Jaycees traveled to Battle Creek on May 3 and won two regional awards at the annual meeting. The Saline club touted itself as the fastest growing Jaycee chapter in Michigan, reporting a 300 percent membership increase this year. Jameson Ford, Saline president, was named key man as the club also earned a traveling trophy based on man miles traveled.

School candidacy petitions due May 13

Petitions have been taken out for Emerson Hadtissler the incumbent Board of Education member and for Hugh Austin for the two four year terms. Petitions must be filed with Gerald Coe secretary of the board by 4 p.m. Saturday May 13.

A planned fan-out system for severe weather alerts starts with the weather bureau notifying Civil Defense Director James Leviett. Leviett then informs officials including Frank Carter Lt Jack Brookins and the Saline Area High School, with others to follow as warnings are issued and actions advised.

Hilarity at Jaycee Auxiliary Fun Night Introduces New Members

The Jaycee Auxiliary held a fun night at Mrs. Gary Dault's home to welcome wives of new members. Contestants designed outfits from pins and newspaper with mini skirts popular. a pants suit won designed by Kay Voightman and modeled by Rosie Martek. A pregnant member wore a mini skirt wedding dress, drawing huge laughs. The group, now 29 members with five new, hosts three upcoming auxiliary meetings and an orientation before signing up.

Saline and Medway ELS exchange bands and chorus visit

Saline High School and Medway High School exchange groups completed a two day visit. Saline performed for four thousand students across three schools in Ontario while Medway hosted Saline students at a reception and shared activities in Saline. Both bands visited Western Ontario School of Music and the University of Michigan.

Advisory Council Names Committee For High School Planning

The Schools Advisory Council appointed a planning committee to study specific areas of the new high school plan. Cochairs are Jack Livingstone and Bill Vander Yacht. Other members named by Mrs. Robert Merchant include Mrs. Richard Wanty, Dan Sirones, Mrs. Martin Vila, Robert McNally, and Mrs. William Crim Jr. The finance committee reported in detail on the total evaluation at the meeting.
