Zoning Change Requested for Saline Michigan Ave Lots

Residents seek rezoning of 10 commercial parcels from Davenport to Maple on Michigan Ave to R-2 two family. Petition notes excessive commercial land, strip zoning waste, entrance block impact, and adequate tax base without new higher uses. Council sent to Planning Commission for review.

City to Run Own Rubbish Pick Up Service

The city will operate its garbage and rubbish collection starting around July 1 after rejecting all bids. Details are not set, but the plan is to test back yard pick up. Council tabled the restaurant ordinance until May 15 and invited County Health Engineer Joe Price to advise. The ordinance would be enforced by the Health Department as in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. The city attorney was asked to amend the farm animals prohibition to allow school farm livestock for education. A request to lease parking spaces for Gottlob Walker was denied to avoid public use and policing issues. Saline will join the Southeast Council of Governments, a regional group of over 100 units.

Disney Film Festival scheduled in Saline May 13

Four screenings of Walt Disney shorts including Peter and the Wolf Beaver Valley and Natures Half Acre will be shown at the Junior High School gymnasium in Saline. Tickets cost 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults. Proceeds aid Your Own Santa a Saline based charity formed in 1966 to support Christmas baskets and visits by Santa.

Helping Hand program gains volunteers and placards across Saline

Enthusiastic reception marks the Helping Hand project with about 120 blue and white placards in homes including Lodi Estates. The Saline Child Study Club sponsors the effort under Mrs. Virgle Goodwin, with police background checks and new by laws.

School contract talks to start Thursday

Negotiators for the Saline Education Association and the Saline School District will meet Thursday to begin talks on teacher contracts for the 1987 68 school year. Michigan State Biophysics Chair Dr Augenstein to Speak at Graduation

Professor Leroy G. Augenstein chairs MSU biophysics and will deliver the commencement address on June 14. He also serves as adjunct professor at San Francisco Theological Seminary and is a frequent lecturer. Saline Woman's Club to wind up 1966 67 year

The Saline Woman's Club will hold its final meeting of the 1966 67 club year at the Methodist Church Tuesday. The annual spring luncheon will be served at 1 p.m. followed by a miscellaneous program. Members must reserve with Mrs. Walter MacArthur by Saturday and bring a white elephant. New officers for 1967 68 will assume office after the concluding business session.

Saline district tax base rises near 50 million

The Saline Area School District projects a 49.995 million dollar tax base for next year, led by a 12.5 million dollar city increase mainly from the Ford plant. Rural townships show modest gains. Saline Township falls by over 300 thousand dollars due to farm property removals from tax rolls. Valuations for Lodi Bridgewater and Pittsfield townships are expected to rise by about 600 thousand dollars combined.

Title I Sessions To Assist 96 Local Children
