Mayor says Tecumseh will restore the lost millpond at a cost of 26980 with work due next July. Saline’s millpond restoration, previously estimated at 175800, stalls after voters rejected the project in 1968. costs have since risen. Photos note two scenes of the dams and plants in Tecumseh and Saline.
Richard Pope of W Bennett Street filed 302 signatures at City Hall to push a referendum on annexation controls in Saline. The drive seeks ordinance requiring landowners to cover costs of any new annexation and delaying further annexations until such law is in effect, with the matter slated for the April 18 City Council agenda.
Canterbury seeks to restore Saline’s missing millpond by raising the dike height three feet and repairing the spillway with a 45 960.75 budget line. Mayor Beach presented the plan after consulting engineer Louis Winkelhaus of Ann Arbor and Tecumseh manager Calhorn, aiming for a July 1971 completion and avoiding radial gates.
Saline police report a rash of break ins attempted break ins and thefts in the past week with investigations ongoing. Incidents include a windshield damage reported by Marilyn Sue Poor at 765 Valley Circle on April 30 and a trunk break attempt on John Brilowski’s car at Weller's Cellar the same night.
The City of Saline and the Saline Police Officers Association move to binding arbitration after the association filed for state arbitration. Council appoints George Johnson to a three member panel as negotiators debate wage demands and a large budget share. The association seeks a 30 percent wage rise plus 29 additional demands totaling about 110000 dollars. The council calls these demands inflationary and out of line amid limited eleven mill budget allocations.
Spring has arrived and the Jensen and Houghton Elementary carnivals are scheduled for Friday May 7 from 6 to 9 pm. Carnival games include Ring-a-Prize Turkey Shoot and String Pull. Tickets are sold in advance at Jensen.
Houghton kindergarten students under Carol Burmeister used paper sacks as helmets and squeeze-tube rations to build a space ship. They launched last week and returned the same day, riding a school bus home after a brief, carefree mission.
