Dam Repair Prospects Dim for Saline Millpond

Saline may not begin dam repair before mid summer as city officials face funding gaps. Federal aid prospects faded after state and federal reviews. Soil Conservation Service could provide up to full funding only if a flood problem is shown, with a survey due in August.

Chamber of Commerce faces disbandment or new manager

The chamber with no current officers and outgoing leaders Paul Sibson Jack Steele Marilyn Sibson and Leon Vedder held a no attendance meeting. To hire a manager dues would rise from 25 to 50 per member and members are urged to respond by April 1.

Trash Burning Ban Enacted as Saline Faces Drought

Saline imposes a city wide ban on open burning after weeks with no rain. Fire crews battled multiple grass fires caused mainly by trash barrels, with permits for burning suspended by the Conservation Department. The order prohibits any fire except in attended closed containers until city council further order.

Review Board Receives Few Appeals This Year

The city Board of Review completed its work with only eight appeals filed this year all in writing. One property owner appeared personally. Appeals all involved residential property across city areas including an apartment building. Final valuation total to be released next week. Craigmile noted the unusually low number compared with 40 to 50 in prior years.

See How They Run Dress Rehearsal At High School

The junior class play See How They Run is being polished in a three act farce at the Little Theatre. Curtain rises at 8 p m Thursday through Saturday with cast Pam Sheats Carol Kraushaar Bob Mann Alyce Krivisky Dal Queenan Ken Jones Steve Wild Brian Prater and Fred Schmerberg directed by Lois Vasicek with Cheryl Mayer as student director Teresa Heller stage manager and Peter Klein as promoter. Good Guys Present See How They Run

The Junior Class plans a Thursday to Saturday high school theater presentation of See How They Run. If audiences have half as much fun as the cast, the play should be a success. The cast list follows as in a high drama program.

UDC Moves To End WVounch Liscoveis Pollution

A city zoning ordinance requiring a permit for disposal of any industrial waste was used for the first time after Harold Mason of 8794 Macon Rd filed a complaint about wastes from Universal Die Casting polluting the Saline River across from the plant. The permit will be reviewed by the planning commission and building department before council action. plant manager Tom Hollowell says wastes are not chemically dangerous and steps have been taken to upgrade waste treatment, including six months of process changes and a study by consultants. A plan will be presented to the Water Resources Commission on March 24 for approval.

City Dump Controversy Rocks Local Council

City officials discovered a 12 year old illegal dump sprawl between Monroe Street and Crestwood, used for sand and trash, drawing six residents to a distant council meeting. DPW workers estimate savings from hauling elsewhere, while residents complain of rats, dust storms, and unsafe access to the ravine.

Variance Hearing Set For UDC Plant Addition

Universal Die Casting seeks a variance permit for a north side addition to address a sinking retaining wall a visible die casting area from neighboring homes and periodic molten metal splashes. A special hearing is set for 8 p.m. Monday March 31 in the council chamber with plant manager Tom Hollowell and neighbors Mr and Mrs Frank Harms signing the application.
