Saline to Host District 12 Band Festival

Saline will host 17 high and junior high school bands on Saturday March 17 for the District 12 Band Festival. Performances run all day in the Saline High School auditorium judged by college directors. 700 band members expected with guides, hosts, and a public audience.

Local Skaters to Appear in Ice Show

Ten Saline youngsters join about 275 Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club members in the 20th annual Melody on Ice at Michigan Ice Rink March 17 and 18. The program features Broadway Hits, Babes in Toyland, Hawaii, County Fair, plus Hockettes performing Anchors Aweigh and Jungle Jazz.

Highway Dept Plans US 12 Resurfacing and Widening

The Michigan Highway Department will resurface part of US 12 in Saline and widen another segment in 1963. R A Trebilcock says US 12 from Monroe Street to Lewis Street will be widened to 48 feet with curb and gutter on both sides, while Lewis Street to the east city limits will be resurfaced. The project contract is to be let in early 1963. The city’s share for the wider section is about 3000 dollars.

All Around Saline Gossips and Homecomings

Pvt. Don Jeppesen arrived home from Ft. Leonard Wood Mo for a 14 day leave with his wife and family. Mr and Mrs Fred Otto returned from a five week vacation to Mexico City Acapulco and Merida Yucatan. They traveled 7000 miles by plane train and bus. Mrs Donald Martin and newborn daughter are home and well. The Martins at 109 Russell St welcomed Luanne Jannette. Wallace Jordan known as Pop Jordan was ill and under treatment at Saline hospital. Al and Dorothy Walker and the Edwin Kueblers returned to Saline after two weeks in Florida touring the state and visiting old friends Don Burkhardt in Lakeland. The Walkers and Kneblers greeted Don Burkhardt, then dined together. Mr and Mrs Ray Davis called on Mrs R R Feuell of Dearborn. Mrs Feuell, widow of Rev R R Feuell longtime Saline Methodist pastor, sent greetings to Saline friends.

City approves parking meter bags for nearby contractor use

City Council approved Glenn Clark's motion to provide bags for meters around work sites in the downtown area. Bags, available at City Hall, cover meters for up to 10 days with a 50 cent daily charge deducted from a $7 deposit.

Scarlet Fever Incidence Said About Normal

Doctors report several scarlet fever cases in Saline area but say the rate is about normal for this time of year. Three cases at Dr Paul Gerigk’s practice and five in Dr Rudenz Douthat and Dr James Davis’s joint practice, with three still homebound. One case this month in Saline. last month four in Saline and ten in the county. Health Department spokesman calls incidence about average.

Principal’s Father Dies In Houghton Lake

High School Principal Elmer Houghton mourns the death of his father Levi Houghton who died Tuesday night after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and two sons. one daughter and two sons preceded him in death. Funeral plans have not been set.

Extensions to study consumer protection in Washte naw county

Leaders of home economic Extension groups in Washte naw county will attend four sessions to study consumer protection. Eunice Pardee of Michigan State University will lead the first talk, with Alice Epple, county Extension agent, speaking at the final three sessions. Meetings are at 1 p.m. Thursday in the County Building, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the County Building, 1 p.m. Wednesday March 7 at Bowes Corners, and 1 p.m. Thursday March 8 at Superior township hall.

Local Saline Hotel bowling team tied for fourth as a Warren squad moved to first with 2997 pins and Grand Rapids matched Saline at 2928. A Grand Rapids bowler posted an actual series of 657. The Michigan Woman's State Bowling Tournament in Muskegon continues for seven weeks.

Saline Elementary students will be dismissed at 11 45 Friday March 9 and Monday March 12 for parent teacher conferences. The Intermediate and High Schools will dismiss at noon Monday to permit teachers to prepare report cards and hold conferences if needed.

The City Council on Monday accepted a bid from Heath Tree Service to spray 600 elm trees on city property lawn extensions and private property at a cost of 1.08 dollars per tree.

Manchester Dumps Dexter to Prevent Tie

Saline clinched at least a share of the Washtenaw Conference title by defeating Chelsea 62 40 after Manchester upset Dexter and bumped Saline into the top spot. LaRue led Saline with 22 points while Farley topped Chelsea with 15. Saline shot 20 of 60 from the floor to Chelsea’s 17 of 56.
