Saline Bicentennial Fourth Offers Community Picnic Events

Saline kicks off July Fourth with a Chicken Barbecue for 2000 at Curtiss Park and a Tug-O-War contest. Private picnics, block parties, church reunions, and a joint worship service with a picnic follow. Saline Jaycees stage youth painting projects and plan a July 30 to August 1 community painting event at the Rogers home.

Go Go Acts Targeted in Bridgewater Tavern Sale

Robert Nelson of Monroe, a former General Foods employee, plans to buy the Bridgewater Tavern from William Kletter. Officials expect the transfer within six weeks and anticipate ending go go entertainment once the sale closes. Nelson pledges a family friendly, lunch and meeting place image for the tavern.

Salina Scouts Honor Four Eagle Recipients

Four Salina Troop 416 members Keith Girbach Rick Janich Jim Delhey and Gary Morningstar received Eagle badges at a Court of Honor last week. Scoutmaster Bud Janich guided them from Cubs to the top rank and received a flag gift. Mayor George Anderson congratulated the group and families as upcoming Reporter issues will trace each scout’s progress.

Begin Writing Workshop at Saline School

Saline Community School offers a summer Writing Workshop for grades 7-12 from July 7 to July 21, 9 to 11 a.m. on weekdays. The program includes photojournalism, writing, a field trip, and basic long composition. Instructors are Marian Faupel and Bette Tucker. To register call Jim Cameron at 429-4981.

Young Loves opens Friday at Weller's Cellar

Summer Theatre Co presents Young Loves by Saline teens at Weller's Cellar 555 W. Michigan Ave July 2 3 and 8 9 10. Eric Losey wrote the show a light hearted tale of three young couples with Broadway tunes Neal Ward on piano Howard Mehler choral director. Dinner theatre option $8 per person or $15 per couple includes ham steak or wine chicken salad bar and dessert tickets available in advance at Citizens Bank or from Summer Theatre Co. members. General show tickets $4 available in advance or at door.

Saline Football Outlook Clarified by School Board

Reported remarks about Saline High's varsity football program continuation were not issued by Coach Crabtree and caused confusion. Woodie Merchant denies any board decision. Superintendent Hintz says cost cuts are possible but varsity funding is largely self supporting, making a cut unlikely.

Vandals Attack Saline Sewer Line Near Old Creek Farms

Vandals blocked the Eastbelt sewer line at two to three manholes on Woodingham Court flooding at least one basement. DPW and Detroit contractors worked to clear the blockage but the line remained partly out of action Wednesday. Mayor Levielt warned of hazardous gases and rising costs while police investigate.

Saline Jaycees Offer Operation Identification Clinic

Saline residents are invited to join a crime prevention effort at the Operation Identification clinic on Saturday July 17. Washtenaw Sheriff’s Dept. Sgt. Pat Little will etch driver license numbers onto portable items to aid police in returning stolen goods and convicting thieves. Participants receive window stickers identifying their home as part of the program, which has reduced thefts in the area.
