Tornado watch followed by violent wind damages EFoover plant roof

A severe wind storm tore roof sections from 40000 square feet of the EFoover Ball and Bearing plant on State Rd Saturday minutes after a Saline tornado watch. Vent blowouts, punctured flashing, and smashed windows caused extensive damage but no injuries from the wind. Roofing crew exposed to creosote reactions, nurse and eye specialist treated them. Repairs began with 65 workers from a Detroit firm, building waterproofed by 5 am Sunday.

Ann Pellegreno Confirms July 15 Saline Homecoming

Ann Pellegreno, who completed the Darwin to route in her Earhart Memorial flight, confirms a Saline homecoming celebration for July 15. She will fly from Lae to New Guinea then on to San Francisco or Oakland by July 7, with further Kansas appearance planned.

DPW to Begin Rubbish and Garbage Pickups July 1

The city plans alternate Saturday rubbish and garbage collections starting July 1 with the north side on that date. A new machine costing about $20 000 should arrive mid August, reducing curbside pickups to once weekly. Households must place rubbish in 30 gallon containers under 70 pounds and start collections at 7 am.

Scouts to Hike 83 Miles Through Three States

Nine senior Scouts from Saline and three leaders depart for an eight day trek covering 83 miles across Indiana Kentucky and Ohio. They will cook out and camp along the way funded in part by scrap paper drives. Leaders are Joe Masterson Harold Fritts and Harold West.

Summer recreation registration rises in area

Approximately 275 area youngsters have registered for the summer recreation program. Director Clem Corona says another 150 to 200 are expected to register later. The total likely will be about 10 percent higher than last year. Swimming and arts and crafts classes are described as a good size, not crowded.

Saline Public Library Opens Full Time For First Time

Saline Public Library begins full-time hours of 39 per week as air conditioning goes on. Librarian Eleanor Todd notes 5 to 10 new patrons weekly, including new residents, with the schedule running 1 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
