City Extends Sidewalk Plan After Community Discussion

Carl Ustich 20 died after his 1959 convertible ran a stop sign on Waters road at Wagner and hit Loy Nelson 46 of Ann Arbor. The crash also involved Philip Reed 35 of Lansing. University Grads Accept Positions and Distinctions

Recap of local graduates receiving degrees and new positions. Earl G. Moehn earns an MD from Wayne State University and will intern at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Weisenreder Family Adopts Injured Fawn

Sadie the three week old fawn, injured after a mowing accident, is cared for by the Weisenreder family on Weber Road. Richard and Al Weisenreder treated the wound and veterinarians were delayed. With Conservation approval Sadie will stay until after hunting season and may stay or depart afterward.

Ralph Bowen Elected Legion Commander At Lutz Post

Ralph Bowen was elected commander of the William B. Lutz post of the American Legion for the coming year. Milton Finkbeiner will serve as senior vice commander, with Bob Greenfield as junior vice commander. Other officers include Howard McCann treasurer Ralph Uphaus adjutant Robert Harvey sergeant at arms Harold Smith chaplain and Carl Moehn historian. The executive board includes Norman Hedger president Ralph Bowen Ted Graban Frank Carter and Ralph Uphaus. Installation is set for July 5.

Old Flags To Be Burned In Ceremony

More than 30 discarded 48 star flags will be destroyed in a traditional ceremony by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary on July 5 at 7 30 p m at the flag pole of the Legion hall. Community members may bring old flags to the Legion hall or to Mrs. Ralph Uphaus for proper disposal.

Teen Club Opens Friday at Saline Intermediate School

The Saline teen club launches Fridays starting June 22 for 9th graders to 19 year olds. Dues are 50 cents per member with 7:30 p.m. start, recreation till 8:30, then dancing to 11. DJ Don Howe spins weekly, membership cards available, guests welcome.

Federated Church Picnic Set for June 27 at Saline Valley Farms

The Morning Circle of the Federated Church will hold a picnic at 11 am on June 27 at the home of Mrs. John Schnell, Saline Valley Farms. Devotions will be led by Mrs. Louis Jacksowski.

City Townships Renew Fire Contract

Contracts between the Saline Volunteer Fire department and four adjoining townships were renewed for the coming year at a joint meeting Friday. The Saline firemen answer calls in Lodi, Saline, York and Pittsfield townships on a fee basis, and the townships pay a percentage of the cost. The Fire department total budget for 1962 63 is 4920, which includes 2200 for wages 500 for equipment and 1250 for operation of radio and telephone service. The total contribution from the townships will be 1587.12 plus the 50 minimum charge for fire calls outside the city.

Local Man Harold Beck Killed in Saline Auto Crash

Funeral services were held for Harold R. Beck 25 of Saline who died after being struck by a passing car on US-12 east of Saline. The driver Milton C. McCarberry 24 and another westbound motorist Harold Rye 63 were involved. Beck served in the Army and was to wed in September. Burial followed at Forest Hill Cemetery. Tom Doenges plans to open a shop at the Saline Mill site.

Saline area schools seek 3.85 mill operating levy

Saline area schools plan a late summer vote to add a 3.85 mill operating levy to the existing 9.32 mills from the Washtenaw County Tax Allocation Board. The board estimates 13.17 mills total needed to operate at the present level as enrolment grows and valuations lag. Superintendent Leo Jensen says funds cover rising teacher salaries and that the district is not seeking excess funds. The 9.32 mills will yield about 259,678 dollars this year, down from last year’s 277,846 dollars. Debt service remains at 5.25 mills.

Sixty Attend Kruger Reunion

Sixty people attended the Kruger family reunion at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kruger on Weber Rd. Potluck dinner was served at noon. The eldest attendee was Mrs. Emma Brown of Milan and the youngest Lori Jean Schafer of Southgate. Relatives came from Adrian Tecumseh Milan Dundee Ann Arbor Saline Ypsilanti Southgate and Brighton for the first reunion in 20 years. Next year’s reunion is planned for the fourth Sunday in June at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pelkey in Brighton.
