St James UCC to observe 80th anniversary Sunday

St James United Church of Christ plans an 80th anniversary observance on Sunday June 30 with two services. The morning sermon by Rev Henry G Kroehler, president of the Michigan Conference UCC, and a homecoming evening message by Rev Armin C Bizer accompany a browsing table and light refreshments. The church was organized in 1883 in the Benton school and joined the UCC in 1958, serving Saline Clinton and surrounding neighborhoods.

County Taxes 97.3 Percent Collected Across Saline

Saline's 1962 county taxes for operations and bonds are 97.3 percent collected with $47,820.68 paid out of $49,156.00. In townships Lodi 96 percent, Pittsfield 90 percent, Saline 96.4 percent, York 91.3 percent of levies were collected. Total county levy $3,396,683.96 with $3,207,952.00 collected, 94.44 percent.

Free Ads Put Teens To Work In The Community

The Reporter details five to six free work wanted notices in every issue, showcasing babysitters lawn mowers painters window washers and teen construction workers. At a congregational meeting Saline Baptist Church voted to buy land on the south end of town for a 24 650 square foot commercial plot owned by Leland Graf Saline The move follows cancellation of plans for the north site and zoning approval A July deadline was set for final building plans with the church to act as its own contractor.

Boy Hit by Car Escapes Injury

Five year old Joseph Malinczak escaped serious harm after being struck by a car on Willis Road near Fosdick Road. He sustained only a wrist abrasion, was checked at Saline Community Hospital, and released. The incident involved Virginia Rogers of Monroe Street, Saline.

Youth Chorale Set for June 27 Tour Abroad

Mr and Mrs Lester McCoy of Saline will take part in the sixth annual Michigan Youth Chorale concert tour departing June 27. The group will perform in England Finland Denmark Sweden and the Netherlands before returning August 15 for a homecoming concert at Hill Auditorium Ann Arbor on September 1. Kathie Reed, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Reed, also sings with the chorale.

Laurents to Encourage French Youth Exchange

The Rev and Mrs George Laurent plan a month in Europe this summer to boost French participation in the Youth for Understanding program. They will set up a Paris committee to recruit French youths and arrange host families for American teens. They sail July 20 from Montreal and return about August 25, with church duties covered by other leaders in their absence.

City Summer Recreation Sees Large Child Turnout

An unexpectedly heavy turnout on the first day of the city summer recreation program overwhelmed facilities. More than 160 children registered for Monday and Tuesday, with 135 beginning swimmers and 50 intermediate swimmers joining trips to the YM YWCA and local sites amid itch concerns and health guidance.

School to Keep Memento for Former Teacher

The Board of Education accepted for safekeeping a loving cup once given to the late Mary Morden to honor her 26 years as a teacher. Presented by the Alumni Association in 1950, the cup returned after her 1962 death and placed with the school. The meeting also approved summer work, use of facilities for recreation, a librarian leave, and thanked outgoing members. A reorganizational meeting with two new members was set for July 1.
