The Detroit riot halted Saline Community Hospital’s linen laundry, forcing an emergency shift of used linen to Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh. With 105 percent capacity, the Saline facility searched desperately for a laundromat as the Detroit firm could not operate in the riot zone. Saline Guard Members Sent To Detroit For Civil Unrest Duty
More than a dozen Saline area men of the 107th Signal Battalion Michigan National Guard were ordered from Camp Grayling to Detroit to quell rioting. They moved via Flint and arrived in Detroit to begin duty at 10 p.m. Tuesday, with many sending reassuring messages home. Names of those in Detroit include Glenn Eschelback John Schwemmin Raymond Feldkamp Don Diable William Lindemann David Wenk Michael Cogar Eugene Heusel Wesley Exelby Joseph Payeur and others. Some remained at Grayling for training in communications, and Danny Payeur 12 accompanied the group as mascot until his uncle picked him up in Belleville. They arrived home at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
