Band Shell Project Nears Construction At Henne Field

Pledges to the K Shell fund reach 5200 with 110 still needed from the 5310 estimated by architect Howard Kuhl. Site chosen by a committee including Principal Howard Hii and Ray Girbach. Planned on Henne Field near the 50 yard line facing east. Donations from the Business and Professional Women's Club and Saline Savings Bank bring the goal closer. Granite plaque offer from Harold Frey to honor Katterjohn. Construction set to begin next week ahead of dedication by Katterjohn after his Joliet posting.

Saline Rotary Plans First Annual Steak Broil

Saline Rotary aims to fund community service with its first annual steak broil on August 16 from 1 to 3 PM at the Farm Council Grounds north of town. Tickets are on sale through local Rotary members for Salinians to buy a grand steak dinner and support Rotary's good works.

City Council Halts Cemetery Walkway Construction

City Council ordered a halt to sidewalk installation at the cemetery after it was noted the path sits below curb level. Officials cited city standards requiring sidewalks to be placed a set number of inches above the curb.

City Hires Two New Officers

The city added two police officers after Monday’s City Council approval. John Fisele, 23, of 760 Knollwood Ct., begins Tuesday. Lawrence Tilford, 23, of 159 Elmwood, starts Monday. Both are Saline residents with prior work at Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. and Chrysler Proving Grounds respectively.

French Students Seek Hosts for Brief August Visits

Four French students aged 19 to 21 seek host families in Saline area during August. They travel independently, plan to stay August 6 to 13, 9 to 11, and 8 to 15, and all speak some English. Allocation of extra state millage sparks county debate

County tax officials discuss distributing an additional three mills from the Michigan Constitution among schools the county townships and the Intermediate School District. Two plans are considered with a possible five year ballot proposal but no final division agreed. The issue may wait until after year start with one proposal to avoid dual ballots.

Saline zoning move criticized by city official

City Supervisor and Assessor Robert Harrison lambasted ordinance No. 175 in a letter, calling it unsuited for Saline's growth and citing discrepancies and likely negative effects on property values. The council plans a Planning Commission meeting Thursday at 7 30 p m at City Hall to review the proposal, though no public hearing is set.

Saline Area School District Approves 1964 65 Budget

The Saline Area School District projects 1964 65 revenues of 816 797 and expenses of 779 054 up 6 percent from 1963 64. Deficit cuts reflect savings in instruction and cafeteria costs plus higher miscellaneous receipts and aid. Enrollment grows to 85 more students with 79 teachers and new payroll systems.

Boy’s Fast Driving Saves Wheat Field

A truck owned by Lynn Reese was destroyed by fire in a tinder dry wheat field. David Reese 15 drove the burning truck to safety, pulling a wagon as brothers Dan 13 and cousin Jeff 12 uncoupled the wagon and kept the flames from the crop. Saline Fire Department responded as the truck burned in a roadside ditch.

City Hall Opens Saturday Mornings Through July

City Hall will be open Saturday mornings in July to take voter registrations. City Clerk E. J. Muir announced the hours as part of the registration drive. Registration for the September 1 primary closes Monday, August 3.

Nepal Doctors Visit Saline Hospital During UM Public Health Summer

Two Nepalese doctors touring Saline Community Hospital as part of University of Michigan Public Health field work plan to return to Nepal in August with masters degrees. They compare Nepal’s medical development to the United States noting postwar gains from nine to 300 doctors for nine million people and reflect on sterile technique standards.
