Saline officials will raise fines for parking violations in August under a new schedule. Expired meter fines remain 1 dollar if paid promptly but rise to 5 dollars after a week. other offenses show 5 or 10 dollar penalties after one week. Police Chief James Levleit cites administrative costs and deterrence as reasons.
Red Cross officials in Saline plan a July 15 Bloodmobile drive at Houghton Elementary School from 2 am to 8 pm. Volunteers including Mrs. Marian Hering and Mrs. Wilma Armbruster seek 100 pints, with appointments available by calling 429 9792. Past drives drew 87 donors yielding 76 pints, while Ford plant workers helped secure about 160 pints in a prior clinic. A separate three car wreck on Michigan Ave left damages and injuries.
William Josephson 21 of 207 S Harris and Jerome Visel 17 of Dexter Pinckney Rd were hurt on Emerald Farms Pleasant Lake Rd west of Parker while cutting hay on a tractor. Josephson and Visel were taken to Saline Community Hospital then University Hospital. Both conditions listed as fair.
Saline Community Hospital reports patients including William McAllister Luella Finkbeiner Mrs Owen Bigelow and Loretta Dechert. Lyle Beach recovers from surgery. St Joseph Mercy Hospital notes include Mrs George Austin undergoing surgery and other area patients Dorothy Beckington Ruby Donahue Anthony Galofaro and Todd McTaggart son of Mr and Mrs Robert McTaggart.
The Saline Post Veterans of Foreign Wars elected and installed new officers at a special meeting this month. New commander Calvin Rocky Hieber leads the lineup with Fred Johnson as senior vice commander, Robert Funk as junior vice commander, Gerald Anderson as quartermaster, Tom Mitchell as chaplain, and Roy Dechert as adjutant.
Saline Superintendent Harold Hintz reports the district faces a 4 percent net teacher increase next fall due to enrollment growth. Over 600 qualified applicants have applied, with 15 hired and five awaiting interviews as the district plans to replace 20 teachers who left last semester. Draft risk discussed. Junior High typing course planned for eighth graders as a new mini course.
Dan Lirones of Film Central on Clark Street launched a summer run of free outdoor films at the Film Central site last Saturday. The premiere was the Disney nature film One Day at Teton Marsh. Lirones invited all to attend, weather permitting, with chairs and mosquito repellant provided.
The Johnson Quicks of E Michigan Ave say water is essential after their third well ran dry. Johnny Quicks plan to annex their property to join the city water system, a move Dale Goble of a nearby floor covering store also pursues due to urgent need. City Hall weighs the remedy.
