Kidnapping and car theft shock Saline crowd

Brownout disrupts Saline power during peak heat

A Saline power outage caused by a Detroit Edison transformer failure left the town in a mid June heat wave blackout. Air conditioners and lights failed as a portable transformer aided the installation of a new unit. Some areas restored by 11 p.m. others remained off into Tuesday afternoon. Tax bills go out on schedule despite valuation appeal delays

Saline plans to mail city tax bills on July 1 after City Attorney Allan Grossman advised approval despite the State Tax Commission delay caused by township equalized valuation appeals. Saline Race Mobilization Guards City From Potential Trouble

Saline Police joined a broad mobilization with state police deputies two helicopters and two planes to supervise a planned motorcycle race expected to draw up to 1000 cyclists. Key checkpoints were at Stoney Creek and Saline Milan and Saline Ann Arbor and Pleasant Lake Roads. Police chief Jim Levlett and patrolman Mike Connor were on duty as shops and bars closed during race hours. The weather worsened with the thermometer rising to a record.
