Harold J. Hintz, 50, of Hanover Horton, chosen as Saline Board of Education’s new superintendent, will assume duties around August 1. He led Hanover district for eight years, holding roles from high school principal to teacher, with degrees from the University of Toledo.

Loud Lady Retired: Reporter's New Press To Arrive This Week

The Reporter of Saline announces replacement of its loud old Miehle press with a faster higher capacity model. Construction will study a two day pit delay before the new press begins nightly publication next Monday.

350 Register For Summer Recreation

Approximately 350 Saline area children have registered for the summer recreation program. Clem Corona, director, reported. Early attendance includes 108 at YM YWCA Ann Arbor for swimming, 65 at Tappan Junior High for swimming, 70 in girls softball, 48 in arts and crafts, and 41 at Wampeler’s Lake for swimming. The Tappan pool bus will depart at 9:25 PM to ensure arrival by 10 AM. No further swimming registrations accepted after Thursday July 2. other phases remain open.

Samborn Enters Republican Primary In New 51st District

Albert J. Samborn WPAG program director and news manager announces candidacy for the GOP nomination in Michigan's new 51st district. He will face incumbent Thomas G. Sharpe in the September 1 primary, with the district including Saline Chelsea Dexter Manchester and surrounding townships. Samborn notes the district's mix of agriculture industry and recreation and cites his 17 years of local engagement. He is a U.M. graduate, Navy veteran, married with two children, and active in local education and Red Cross groups.

Saline Red Cross Names New Board Members

Mrs. George Austin representing the Saline branch of Washtenaw County American Red Cross was elected to the board at the annual meeting. Also elected were Mrs. Edwin Henes of Saline Township and Rev. Leroy Cabbage of York Township. More than 300 attended the dinner meeting at the Ann Arbor chapter headquarters.

Saline Rotary Club sets August 16 for a steak fry at Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds. Michigan Livestock Improvement Association figure Mr. Meat, aka Pat Brown, to supervise the fry with Rotarians of Saline assisting. Menu features large rib eye steaks, baked potato, rolls, coffee, salad and ice cream.

Youth Jailed On Reckless Driving Count

A 21 year old Dexter youth was sentenced to 10 days in jail by Justice of the Peace Jerome Lamb after pleading guilty to reckless driving and driving with an expired license. Luckhardt was arrested by Saline police after a high speed chase reaching 90 mph and was fined 103 dollars with 10 dollars costs and remanded for failure to pay. Three local minors in possession of intoxicants face JP Court Friday following arrests by state police at Clinton post on June 21 for speeding and related charges.

Merritt Martin Elected National Junior Chamber Vice President

Saline Jaycee Merritt Martin and Michigan Jaycees official has been chosen as one of ten national vice presidents of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Delegates at the Dallas convention named him to the post, which he will fill while representing Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota North Dakota and Kansas in frequent visits and programming efforts.

MEHA Files Annexation Petition for Education Village Site

MEHA filed an annexation petition for 253 931 acres north of the city near the High School to build a retirement village for educators. City Council will decide at the July 6 meeting with approvals also needed from Lodi and Pittsfield Township boards. MEHA signed a city contract agreeing to fund sewer and water extensions and tap-in charges.

Crash Fatal To Monroe County Youth

A Monroe County youth, Robert M. Skiff of London Township, died after his pickup crashed with a car at Maple and Hack roads in Saline Township. June E. Dickens, 21, of Deerfield, was uninjured. The intersection has no signs, with poor visibility due to high weeds. Both vehicles were about 40 mph.

Stop sign case against William Starling dismissed

Justice of the Peace Jerome Lamb dismissed a charge against William Starling of driving through a stop sign. The dismissal followed a motion by Roderick Janich, the signer of the citizen's complaint that led to Starling’s arrest.

Barn Blaze Destroys Saline Township Barn and Shed

A Saline Township fire leveled a barn and tool shed and burned a silo remaining standing. Fireman Gordon Dunham suffered arm burns while helping battle the blaze. Owners Mr. and Mrs. Eckhardt Schroen and renter Roy Stoddard reported extensive damage to farm equipment and storage. Fire crews worked over two hours to prevent spread to a nearby house and wheat field.
