Saline City Council passes Ordinance 233 to regulate and upgrade garbage removal. Residents face new container limits 150 gallons per dwelling, 75 pounds per bag, and 3 by 3 by 4 foot tote rules. Commercial and multi dwelling limits set. pickups start week of Feb 7 with phased compliance.
Saline plans two March of Dimes fundraisers with Mothers Marchers door to door tonight at 7 p.m. under Mrs. Warren Gram and Mrs. Howard Hill. A Sunday bakery coffee at Walker's Bakery runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with proceeds aiding the 1972 March against Birth-Related Injuries and Defects. Local clubs and Welcome Wagon volunteers organize the events with donations supported by Saline area merchants.
Police Chief James Levlett announced the Saline Police Department is coordinating with the 14th District Court to refer over 300 open parking summonses to court. Visiting Judge Henry Arkison will issue warrants once sworn complaints are presented and an officer will begin processing cases Monday Jan 31.
Jerry Loader of N. Ann Arbor St. Saline was named the 1972 Saline Jaycee Distinguished Service Award winner at the DSA Banquet on Jan. 19 at Leutheuser's. His wife Jan and children celebrated as Loader, active in Jaycee projects and local sports leagues, accepted the honor after a career of leadership roles and community service with the Jaycees.
Saline and Chelsea prepare for a crucial high school boys basketball game Friday at Saline High. Chelsea seeks revenge after a Dec. 10 loss, hoping to disrupt the Southeastern Conference standings and threaten a three way crown with Lincoln. The Hornets aim to win on their home court to reset the memory of the prior defeat.
Saline receives a 15,000 dollar federal grant over two years to hire a recreation director. Applications are due January 31 at the Michigan Employment Service in Ann Arbor, with qualifications including unemployment of at least seven days and a high school diploma or better. The director will oversee summer and winter programs, coordinate activities at the Community Center, and report to the Recreation Commission.
