Saline High School Honors Roll for Third Period

Saline High School announced both third period and semester honor rolls this week, listing students who achieved high academic standing across the district.

28 Salinians Receive CD Diplomas

Mayor Jack Bennett distributed Civil Defense diplomas to 28 Saline area residents after completing a five session course led by Col. Gerald Miller. Recipients include Dorotha Russell Helen Griffin Bernice Armbruster and others from the public and school system. Certificates went to Fire Chief Harold Armbruster and 12 more CD volunteers along with City officials. The council noted the six week process to obtain state highway banner permissions and urged early resolutions for upcoming banners.

Saline Hornets edge U High Cubs for share bid

Saline defeated U High 75 to 62 to boost chances at a Washtenaw Conference title share. Ed Strait scored 32 and Jerry McDonald 23 as Saline built a late lead and relied on 23 of 26 free throws. Rebounds favored U High 37 to 34.

Anderson's Plans Expansion with Two New Departments

Anderson's on South Ann Arbor Street will add two departments during a mid March grand opening. The expansion will repurpose the former Rieckhoff Jewelers space to increase floor area by about one third and introduce a children's teens and misses shoes department and a men's wear department. The store will source merchandise through its New York buying office and invite Saline residents to suggest preferred lines. The store remains open during expansion and will host favors and refreshments at the grand opening.

Saline Teachers Suffer Winter Injuries

Two Saline educators were injured Monday. Dwight Reynolds, intermediate principal, broke his left arm when a ladder collapsed while he shoveled snow from his roof. Taylor Jacobsen, high school art teacher, used a cane after injuring his right foot in a basketball game with students.

Local Bowlers Lead State Tournament In Muskegon

Saline Hotel sponsored team from Saline led the Michigan Woman's State Bowling Association event in Muskegon with 2928 pinfall across 960 1000 and 968 games to edge Pontiac who held 2890. Roster includes Shirley Rieckhoff Shirley Armbruster Catherine Beach Alice Goltz and Arlene Bersuder.

City Spreads 50 Tons of Salt Amid Winter City Work

DPW crews distributed about 50 tons of salt to keep streets and sidewalks usable in January. Mike Strait said crews cleaned catch basins and thawed water lines, built a sewer cleaning trailer, painted signs and saw horses, repaired meters, cut trees, and council urged bids for elm tree spraying later in the year.

High School Parents Hear Dr Buchanan

The High School Parents-Teachers group will meet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday February 13 in the all purpose room. Guest speaker Dr. Thomas Buchanan of Ypsilanti State Hospital will present Understanding Alcoholism. All parents and interested persons are invited. light refreshments will be served.

Saline Group Plans Scenic Route Maps for 1962

Mr and Mrs Eathern Roark represented the Saline Chamber of Commerce at a US 12 association meeting in Jonesville. The group voted to publish strip maps of the Scenic Route to Chicago with 100 000 copies planned for the 1962 tourist season. Saline’s share of the cost amounting to $200 will be paid by the chamber and local businesses.

Millpond 43 Acres Sold to City for Park Land and Pond

Saline officials accept Mill Owners bid for nine acres adjoining the city park and the millpond. Mayor Jack Bennett says title transfer will occur after updating the abstract. Purchase price is 1200 dollars, including the dam and breast works along the road.

Curved Bar Awards Presented to Two Saline Scouts

Janis Coe and Joan LaRue received the Curved Bar awards at Saline Intermediate School for their five year Girl Scout project work in homemaking and crafts. Troop 280 leader Mrs. John Schnell presented the honors to the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Coe and Mr. and Mrs. John LaRue, marking the first high award in years. The ceremony included badge presentations for Troops 128 277 and 279 and project displays plus color slides from Cedar Lake Senior Sojourn and Heritage Caravan.

A faculty basketball team defeated SHS alumni 72 to 63 in a benefit game at the High School gym for the New March of Dimes. Top scorers were Paul Thibault with 24 and Larry Smith with 21 for the teachers while Alan Coe made 12 for the alumni.
