A column notes the periodic holiday onset of viral and bacterial infections as people report chills aches and sore throats. Doctors report typical seasonal cases with treatments including penicillin or tetracycline if bacterial, plus aspirin rest and fluids.
Wayne State University awarded former Saline resident J Michael Washburn an Ed D degree on December 7 with a focus in educational administration. Washburn, now Assistant Superintendent for Employee Relations at Wayne-Westland, has held principal and teaching roles across district schools and led contract negotiations. He lives in Canton Township with his wife Sara and children Kim Jon and David.
Saline Scout Troop 416 hosted a December 13 Court of Honor at the Methodist Church with Scouts Scouters and friends. Merit badges and rank awards were given and Dean Gillespie won the neckerchief contest with his design to be adopted. Ron Cosby accepted the troop charter for 1977 and plans for a seven day wilderness canoe trip in the U P were announced.
Saline prepares for the January 1 1977 Rose Bowl as Michigan battles USC with Saline natives in performing roles. Kurt Schmerberg Brian Singleton Tim Schumaier join the U M Marching Band on national TV while George Edson to accompany the squad. Don and Margie Shelton plan to root.
A 20 year old Saline man James Edward Gilbee was charged with taking a 1973 Chevrolet pickup left running behind The Keg Tavern on Michigan Ave. He drove to Mills Valley Apartment complex damaging three vehicles and was later linked to an arrest warrant. A separate warrant involves a 27 year old Tipton man for larceny from vehicles behind Thompson's Bar and Lounge on Nov. 12.
Jill Drake recalls Mrs. Beasley a beloved Granny doll now gone after the Drake family home on Circle Ct was chewed by the family dog Clifford. Ike and Mary Lou Drake search southeast Michigan for a replacement before Christmas and ask Reporter readers for help locating the doll.
University of Michigan handed degrees to about 2,100 candidates at Ann Arbor on Sunday December 19. First Lady Betty Ford received an honorary doctor of laws. Seven graduates from Saling listed with degrees include Eli Drannon Buskini William Lee Jungers James Thomas Low Daniel Gene Morabito Darryl Saddler and Stephen Merri White. Carol Rugg of The Reporter earned a Masters in Journalism.
Saline Boy Scouts sponsor a paper drive on Saturday January 15 1977 at Murphy's Market from 8 am to 1 pm. Magazines and newspapers should be separated and tied securely. Trucks will collect papers across the community with outlying residents asked to bring papers to Murphy's Market. Proceeds benefit participating troops for Scouting activities.

Inpatients at Saline Community Hospital included Albert Bradley Bertha Hertler Josephine Livergood Ethel Pielemeier and Olga Steiner with others still hospitalized. Discharged were Meredith Bixby Florence Bracey Leo Townsend Alice Moore Frieda Hertler Marilyn Hedding and Albert Flaherty. Kirk Faupel hospitalized after kidney stone surgery at University of Michigan Hospital and expected to be out by early January. Fire crews responded to a Ford pickup fire on Waters Rd at Lone Oak Estates with no injuries.
The Saline City Council wraps up the year with action on water sewer talks with the State Institute for Fisheries Research, a police car purchase from Chrysler Proving Grounds, and a move to open meetings per the Open Meetings Act. City Supt. Mike Strait to retire in February after 25 years.
A Culligan water truck flipped onto its side on S Ann Arbor at Pleasant Ridge as a Saline firefighter controlled a gas spill. Police found no driver error. a factory rear end defect is suspected while the driver, treated for minor injuries, returned to work.
