Girbach Repeats as Saline Fair Board President

Raymond Girbach was reelected president of the Saline Community Fair Board for 1963 at the annual meeting, with Donald Wiedman stepping down after three years. The board also set Sept 11–14 for the fair and approved a 1962 financial report showing a net profit of 139.17 on receipts of 9,316.61, while noting rising expenses and weather impacts.

Rink Opening Depends on Weather for City Ski Plans

The ice rink at Henne Field may be flooded for use late next week if cold weather continues. A separate confined hockey rink will be built east of the football field, detached from the main skating area. The recreation committee disclaims liability for injuries on either rink. Members include Bob Russell, William Brink, Clyde Griffin, Bud Niethammer, Taylor and Barry Jacobsen.

UF Board Declares Drive Closed in Saline Area

The Saline area United Fund drive for 1962-63 ended with $10,974.90 on hand, 98 percent of the $11,209 goal. Co-chair Regis Wolfinger and budget chairman Dean Burkhardt led the effort. E R Richards is president with Cecelia Ference secretary and Erwin Schmid treasurer.

Saline Pre-Christmas Fun Boosted by Meters Bagged and Santa Visits

Downtown Saline keeps meters bagged as Christmas shoppers begin the spree. City events run Friday to Saturday nights and all next week until 9, with Santa visits on Friday and Saturday, homemade candy, letters, and Kiwanis Club movie cartoons at the Intermediate School gym on the 22nd. Chamber of Commerce prizes precede the finale.

Saline Jaycees announce their annual Christmas home lighting contest open to city residents. Judges tour the city on Saturday December 22 to pick the best decorated home. Chairman Gerald Hering leads the event with plaques for winners and honorable mention homes.

Saline Township GOP Sets Meeting For Nominating Petitions

Saline township Republicans meet at 8 30 p m Monday in the township hall to circulate nominating petitions for all township offices for the spring election. Petitions carrying 43 names must be filed with the township clerk by December 31. Voters will nominate by primary for the first time this year after the switch from caucus approved in December 1961. The township board holds its regular meeting at 8 p m Monday.

New Council Organizes Six Commissioners Named

Police Chief Jim Levlett announced a new policy strengthening penalties for minors found with intoxicants. Juveniles and those aged 17 to 21 will be jailed and arraigned, with offenders and others furnishing alcohol to minors subjected to immediate jail. He cited rising minor drinking despite stagnant arrest numbers and linked many serious crimes to drinking.

Appointive Posts To Be Filled At Jan 7 Meeting

City council members discussed six commissioner posts held by councilmen and upcoming appointments for January. Newcomers Don ald Dechert and Robert Strohl will join the council with George Johnson and Mayor Jack Bennett reelected. Other posts include street utilities police and fire and building planning. Appointments to fill city attorney assessor two supervisors clerk superintendent and health officer will be made at the first January meeting along with two nonofficial members for planning and the tax board of review. Charter takes effect January 1.

Runaway Detroit boy returned to Boysville in Macon

A 14 year old from Detroit was found by Saline police walking on E Michigan Ave at 2 am and returned to Boysville in Macon early Thursday. The boy had been missing and was located by authorities after a tip. He remained in the care of Boysville.
