Senior Girl Scout Troop 279 led by Mrs. Charles Deasy sponsors a Christmas Bazaar on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wight Cleaners. They will sell decorations centerpieces and Barbie clothes made by the scouts. proceeds fund a trip planned for next summer. Troop 279 is sponsored by the Child Study Club.
A series of slides on Saline schools prepared by Daniel Sirones of the Schools Advisory Council will be shown at the Thursday noon meeting of Rotary at Leutheuser's Restaurant. Gerald Coe is the program chairman.
Mrs. Paul H. Woods and Allan Grossman vie for the two Saline seats on the six member Wash tenaw County Community College board. The January 15 election will decide establishment of the college with five other county candidates already filed.
The December 16 deadline to register to vote in the January 15 special election on proposed Wash lege is announced. Residents register with city or township clerks as voters decide millage and elect six trustees who would choose a site and supervise construction if approved.
E A Sawall, traveling freight agent for the New York Central, based at Saline Depot, now handles ten stations on the Airline Branch from Jackson to Centerville. He visits these stations on Tuesdays and Fridays each week.
The ice rink on Henne Field in Saline may open this week if cold weather holds. Run by the city recreation department winter sports committee, it is Washtenaw County’s largest rink with day and evening skating and a separate hockey area. Work began on filling the rink, with Bob Russell as chairman and Al McPhee as secretary treasurer. Volunteer helpers include Clyde Griffin, Milton Hartman, Jim Griffin, Bruce Niethammer, and others. Key Club members under Kiwanis supervision will manage skating and ice care and sharpen skates for a fundraiser.
Mrs. Chris Volz resigns as canteen chair after 12 years with the Saline Red Cross Blood Bank operation. Alwin Burkhardt becomes chairman with Mrs. Edwin Hering and Mrs. George Austin as co chairs. The next Blood Bank visit is January 15 at the Intermediate School.
City Council, on DPW Superintendent Mike Strait’s advice, decided not to fill the 250 000 gallon water tower until spring to avoid freezing the old tower. Painting the new tower will wait for warm weather. Cold weather delayed Henry Street asphalt and Rolling Meadows No 1 gravel work, with a plan to apply chloride if dust returns.
The Saline Area United Fund drive moved to 95 percent of its $13,025 goal with $12,382 raised. Drive chairman Buford Soden credited mainly business and some residential contributions and forecast the drive closing by next week. He expressed confidence the goal would be met.
Saline crews place festive decorations on light posts as meters are covered December 14 to December 25 after council approval. Santa visits on Saturday with bank appearance 2 PM to 5 PM and letters to Santa in the main corner red box. Kiwanis sponsored cartoon movies December 19 at 4 PM in the Intermediate School gym.
A concert by the 6th and 7th grade bands is planned for 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Intermediate School. The performance serves as the school's Christmas program for parents and the public.
Saline Community Fair Board meets Monday at 8:30 pm in the High School agriculture room to vote on moving the fair from town or keeping the Intermediate School site. Officers will be elected as the board weighs congestion, mud, lack of a show ring, parking, and tent costs versus the Farm Council property with lighted ring, covered area, ample parking, and permanent buildings.
City officials weigh supplying water outside Saline as wells show strain. Three wells can produce about 2 000 gpm, far above current use, while nearby private wells dry. A M Chevrolet Co and Lyle Beach seek outside-city water though properties lie outside city limits.
