Thieves Target CB Radios and Bicycles in Saline Week

Police report multiple thefts in Saline including four citizen band radios valued at nearly 700 and three bicycles stolen between August 17 and August 23. Items taken include a Schwinn Varsity 10 speed, an Atala 10 speed, a Ward's three speed bicycle, and two potted plants. Investigations ongoing.

City Tax Deadline Nears for Saline Residents

Saline taxpayers are reminded that August 31 is the final date to pay summer property taxes without penalty. Starting September 1, a 3 percent penalty applies for the first month and 4 percent per month thereafter for delinquency.

Saline voters approve 15.78 mill tax for schools

Saline Area Schools win a 15.78 mill levy for operations after a record turnout of 2,740 voters. A separate one mill proposal failed. The millage funds will sustain a full school year with state aid and county funds. budget cuts may follow the defeated measure.

Save A Life program graduates 110 in CPR training

Over 110 Salinians earned CPR certification after the final of three Operation Save A Life sessions sponsored by the Saline Police, Saline Jaycees, Saline Community Hospital and the American Red Cross. Nine hours of study covered mouth to mouth resuscitation, heart massage and other first aid revival techniques. Instructors from the Jaycees and SCH taught, with Resuscitator Annie used for testing. About 10 to 13 manikins were donated to the sessions along with supplies and refreshments. Police Sgt. Jim Douglas praised the turnout and volunteer support.

Miss Saline Pageant Seeks Entrants Before Deadline

Two days remain for Saline area girls aged 16 to 24 in the Miss Saline Pageant. Entry deadline moved from Sept. 3 to Aug. 27 due to Labor Day plans. Eligible entrants live in the Saline School District and receive a $25 entrant check. Contest Sept. 7 at 8:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds with trophies and savings bonds for winners. no bathing suit portion.

Saline Parents Seek Retention of Crossing Guards

A group of 11 Saline parents urged the school board to keep adult crossing guards on duty for the next school year. Guards, budgeted at 12 000 dollars, were slated for elimination if a one mill tax levy failed in Monday's vote, which did not pass by 30 votes. The board planned final budget-cut discussions as the group began a petition drive with contact numbers for organizers Pat Collins and Bette Tucker. Also noted is Saline Church of Christ nearing completion of its new E Michigan Ave sanctuary with an open house planned for Sunday September 12, built largely by members.
