A fourth annual name the pony contest at Saline Community Fair rewards a donated pony and saddle to a local child. Entries due by noon September 12, with pony viewing Wednesday and Thursday. ponies must come from within 10 miles and be registered by noon September 11. The winner is announced at 4 pm Thursday after the show.
From the August 22 1953 issue: Alice Lambarth and Richard Macomber wed at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev H L Engel officiating, the couple planning a Lima Center Rd home after a North Michigan honeymoon. Also engaged: Marilyn Walker to Farrell Beach. Capt Laurence Deedee and wife Laurie returning from Air Force duty. From August 20 1958: Betsy Wright crowned Miss Babe Ruth. Lauren Wild elected Saline Community Chest president. Gordon Esch vice president. Sally MacArthur secretary. Luella Lambarth treasurer. Wilson Scott to lead the campaign again. Sputnik sighting spooks Saline Hotel staff and guests at 8:45 pm.
Alona Kay Frey 18 of Saline will compete in the Michigan State Fair beauty contest. The fair opens Friday evening and runs through Monday September 2 with preliminaries August 26 at the Music Shell and finals the next day. Frey is Miss Saline 1963 and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Frey of Saline.
