Saline to reapply for federal aid on sewer expansion

City officials after meeting with Michigan Municipal League reassert plans for a $210000 sewer disposal expansion. A federal grant could cover up to $60000, with remaining funds from bonds or revenues. council set a September 1 deadline and a special meeting for August 26 to advance the application.

Norman A Brown Named Washtenaw County 4 H Extension Agent

Norman A Brown a Temperance native and Bath teacher will become Washtenaw County 4 H Extension Agent starting September 1 pending Michigan State University board action. He led Future Farmers of America as state president in 1956 57 and served as national secretary 1958 59. Brown a high honors graduate in education from MSU was active in Phi Kappa Phi and studied rural youth work for the State Department in 1959. He is married with two children.

Local 4-H Plans State Show Activities

More than 130 delegates from Washtenaw and surrounding counties will participate in the annual week long 4 H State Show at the MSU campus in East Lansing August 26 to 29. Exhibitors and demonstrators will showcase educational activities while senior winners from seven counties compete in interviews and public speaking. Highlights include a banquet honoring long service to 4 H for eight community members.

Savings Bank Moves to New Saline Site

Saline Savings Bank plans a 3,500 square foot expansion moving one block east to 114 EH Michigan Ave. The project quotes William Crim Sr. citing growth and extended service with automatic facilities. Architects Daniels and Zermack of Ann Arbor design a modern interior with drive-in and walk-up windows and a large community room.

Benefit Dance Planned by Washtenaw CF Chapter

The Washtenaw county chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis association will hold a benefit dance at the Saline American Legion hall from nine to midnight on Saturday September 7. Music by the Rhythmaires. Mrs Robert Starling of Saline is county chairwoman.

Saline Legion to Host Second District Memorial Service

The William B. Lutz Post No. 322 and Auxiliary will host the second district memorial service and install new officers on Sunday. Deceased Legion and Auxiliary members will be honored. Mrs. Doris Mida of Ypsilanti leads the service with Mrs. Orville Finkbeiner of Saline to be installed as district president. The Brooklyn Installation Team and Mrs. Ben Alber of Ann Arbor participate in the installation. Service begins at 2 p.m.

The regular September 2 City Council meeting has been postponed to Monday, September 9, delaying local approving actions and agenda items for the week.

Saline Notables Take Navy Air Force Steps and Family News

All Around Saline Butch Zurlinden has enlisted in the Air Force and left for basic training in San Antonio to specialize in mechanics. Bob Sullivan also left to train as an airman at Lackland AFB Texas. Wayne Smead and his family return from a 12 day camping trip through northern Michigan and Canada. Miss Merrilie Harvey underwent surgery at Saline hospital Tuesday. Other surgical patients include Mrs. Arthur Alber, Mrs. Maurice Henderson, and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Boutson of Jonesville visited the Leonard home for Nellie Zurlinden’s wedding. A birthday dinner for Mr. Boutson followed with guests including Mr. and Mrs. Jack Leonard and family and Mrs. Earl Myers. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Schneider of Ann Arbor were dinner guests of Mrs. Rubena Werner.

Letters Mailed to High School Parents About Schedules and Fees

Parents received letters detailing study schedules and fees for their children. Registration for next year begins August with 8th grade on the 26th, 9th on the 27th, 10th on the 28th, 11th and 12th on the 29th and 30th, with new students following the same plan.

Council approves ordinance on bad checks

City Council adopted a new ordinance to charge passers of checks with insufficient funds in Justice of the Peace Court on misdemeanor counts. It sets 90 days in jail or a $100 fine or both for checks under $50 with insufficient funds, while higher amounts and repeat offenses remain under state felony statutes in Circuit Court.

Paul Thibault, Saline High School social science teacher for about six years, is named acting assistant principal and athletic director by the Board of Education. Dwight Reynolds resumes transportation manager duties, while Howard Hill becomes High School principal.

Budget approved for extra voted millage and land gift noted

The board approved an operating budget of 12.5 mills about 35 710 43 dollars with 5 25 mills for debt retirement. Only 2 82 of the 3 5 mills extra voted millage will be used this year as higher millage was granted to reduce needs. A one tenth acre land gift from Dr Lloyd Steiner west of the High School will aid current and future use.

Saline International Bazaar Brings Color and Bargains

Saline's downtown will glow with international color Friday and Saturday as the Chamber of Commerce event features performances exhibits contests and bargain offerings. Flags fly in front of shops while performers from foreign lands appear in period costumes and eateries serve diverse cuisines including Greek German and English tea.
