County library costs front and center at board meeting

Washtenaw County Board of Supervisors discussed library expenses citing about 66 000 in costs for the year and under 12 000 volumes circulated. They debated per volume costs and proposed a phone based book delivery as a cost saving measure.

Fred Korte Named Saline Hospital’s Most Expert Patient

Fred Korte of 304 E Henry St is Saline Community Hospital’s top booster and the self described most expert patient. He says he has been admitted 17 times in recent years and was admitted for surgery Tuesday with expected release Wednesday. He praises the hospital’s care as excellent.

Work Started On Clark Street Apartments

Excavation began at a Clark St site for the first of 64 apartments to be built by Eugene Holly and Ray Schrope of Ann Arbor. Plans include eight buildings with eight units each. A 20 unit building is under construction by Chernick & Son of Detroit and S Harris St., plus two 10 unit buildings separated by a court.

City studies employee retirement plan discussed

City Council debated a municipal employees retirement program and ordered surveys of city workers. The plan would cover full time staff, cost about 3700 dollars pending actuarial review, require 3 percent to 5 percent employee contributions with refundable city pension, and no opt out.

A proposed 18 mill property tax allocation plan would divide funds 11.22 mills to schools 5.5 to county 0.12 to the Intermediate District and 1.16 to townships. The Board accepted the report 4-2 and supervisors will finalize action by September 15.

Fate of Old Water Tower Debated

Saline council wrestled with the fate of the roughly 60 year old water tower. An engineer said keep only for emergencies or sell for salvage while warnings of rust or stagnation if kept empty. After debate the council ordered the clerk to dispose of the old tank in the most economical way.

Thief Steals Door and Eleven Kitchen Cabinets

A vacant house at 806 Knollwood Ct was robbed this week of one front door and eleven kitchen cabinets valued at 300 dollars. The F J Winton Corp., developers of the subdivision, owns the property. Police found no witnesses or leads.

Mills Road Location Gets Tentative Okay

A site on Mills Road about ten acres owned by Edwin Hering is provisionally chosen for a new elementary school pending removal of high tension wires and approval of a bond issue by electors. The board, with agreement from Detroit Edison Co. and architect Guido Binda, plans construction next spring if the bond passes. The December 14 election is set, with sewer and water available on Mills Road. The board also approved insurance for school vehicles and low dairy bid, and authorized borrowing $175 000 in anticipation of state aid while adopting the 1964 budget.

Advisory Council Committees Schedule Meetings

The Saline Area Schools Advisory Council will not meet in full this month but two committees hold sessions. The public relations committee met with Board member Gerald Coe and Superintendent Harold Hintz to plan a public information series. The bus maintenance and housing facilities committee will meet at 8 p.m. August 26 with Dwight Reynolds Paul Thibault and David Soule inviting district attendance.

Saline faces a near deadline with only two announced candidates for three City Council seats. Rob ert Strohl and George Anderson plan new terms. Mayor race pits incumbent Jackson T. Bennett against George Johnson, who vacates his council seat. Donald Dech ert will not seek another term. Jerome Lamb seeks another term as Justice of the Peace. Nominating petitions due by September 1 with at least 70 signatures.
