The Saline Board of Education responds to questions about the 3.85 mill millage plan stating the amount funds current standards and reduces the deficit. It notes the levy on a $27,862,466 valuation yields $107,270.49 and explains one year only due to uncertain future revenues.
Saline High School graduates consistently posted high averages in Michigan colleges with many earning dean's lists and honors. Principal Elmer Houghton notes most reports show strong college prep locally, though some schools do not report. University of Michigan yardstick shows local classes average near B or higher.
At a Monday city council meeting a reader signed as Tax payer complained of an out house on NYC railroad property used by transients. George Bonich asked action on a small enclosure near his home where three dogs use it and waste accumulates. He cited odor health concerns and noted nine other dogs in a nearby domicile. The council planned ordinance study and possible resident limits.
Twenty four youngsters earned Red Cross beginners' swimming certificates after seven weeks of instruction at the Y provided by the city recreation program. The photo lists seated, kneeling and standing swimmers with several absentees noted.
The council promised a necessity based review after a 20 owner meeting. Residents urged caution with comments by Harry Miller and Dr. John Buck. Donald Dechert warned industry may move away without sidewalks. some Willis and Davenport Street owners expressed opposition. Mayor Bennett said areas will be studied and letters sent if the program continues or is reconsidered.
At Monday night’s Council meeting Mayor Jack Bennett questioned fishing limits on the mill pond and warned that without action boats could flood in. He suggested restricting boats to prevent speed boats and protect the pond.
City Council approved the Post Office department plan to place an additional drop box at the northwest corner of Hall Street and Michigan Avenue. The approval follows a Monday vote and outlines the location for mail returns.
Saline's annual big bargain Sidewalk Sale comes Friday and Saturday August 17 and 18 with markdowns on first-line merchandise contests prizes and special events planned by local merchants. Chamber of Commerce sponsors and committee members include Dorothy Walker Marty Hemenway Robert Estes and others.
Rural mail-carrier Bob Ormsby completed his annual pheasant count and mailed results to the state Conservation department. He saw only three or four full grown birds and no small chicks. The count was slightly higher than last year, likely affected by a dry two week counting period. After heavy rain, he noted more birds along the roads.
Mayor Jack Bennett announced shifts to a four Monday monthly schedule with regular meetings on the first and third Mondays and work meetings on the second and fourth. All sessions are open to the public and a meeting with an auditing firm is set for Monday August 13.
City Council adopted a resolution Monday night renaming City Park to Curtiss Park to honor Carl A Curtiss for a 4000 gift funding 21 acres of adjacent park land west of the river on Michigan Avenue. The change is effective immediately and a dedication will be arranged.
Physical exams for all boys trying out for football will be given at 2 p.m. Thursday August 23 at the High School, coach Mike Rotunno announced. Equipment distribution follows. Practice starts 9 a.m. Monday August 27. Mouthpieces must be worn and will be fitted in sessions starting 1 p.m. Wednesday August 15 at the High School.
Five candidates filed petitions in the City Clerk's office for the November election. Mayor Jackson T. Bennett is unopposed for re election. Four candidates seek three council seats: incumbents Glenn Clark and George Johnson and newcomers Donald Dechert and Robert Strohl. Councilman Douglas Milhan not seeking re election.
City Council Monday instructed Councilman Doug McKenzie to initiate action to enlarge the Detroit street storm drain after a letter from Florence Armbruster describing it as a hazard. The 12 inch tile laid about 50 years ago is undersized as floodwaters of a large eastern area overwhelm the route from Maple Road to an open ditch near S. Ann Arbor. The drain widens to 24 and 30 inches at key points and meanders beneath garages and buildings. The county will receive the petition for improvement since it is a designated county drain.
Saline area voters largely backed Republicans on Tuesday with Petersen winning the sheriff race and Leonard defeating Werner for treasurer. Roy Smith led most precincts for state representative while incumbent James Warner kept his nomination. Turnout was moderate to light with Saline city totals showing lopsided supports for Romney Swainson and other GOP candidates.
Mrs Everett Esch and Mrs Hugh Keveling hosted 35 E.Srs. from the University of Michigan Saturday afternoon at the Esch home. Camp Talahi draws local youths including Wendell Carr Carolyn Handy Dianna Alber Marlene Roehm Howard Gird Bach and Ron VanMatre. A German nephew surprised Lage and Gottlob Walker at the bakery arriving from Stuttgart to spend a month visiting uncles Gottlob and Eugene Walker of Ann Arbor. Mr and Mrs Ormond Seitz returned from Manistee National Forest after a week away. Herman Howeisen left St Joseph Mercy Hospital after a week as patient. Cathy Maxwell visits Monroe and returns home today. Alfred Harwood and his wife return from Granite City after Army Reserve service with 478th engineer depot company. Ronny Wild and Marion Carter also to return. Tom Doenges progresses with refurbishing the old mill painting front in gray with plan for colonial red. Fred and Mrs Anderson return from New York City with fall merchandise for Saline and Chelsea stores.
David Wallo injured July 29 in an automobile crash on Bethel Church Road remains unconscious with unchanged condition at St. Joseph Hospital. His father William Wallo his younger brother and a cousin have been released and are recovering at home.
City Council rejected a preliminary plan for about 416 lots in Rolling Meadows on the Planning Commission's recommendation. The commission cited lack of exits to Harris Street and Maple Road, noting the plan only showed current streets feeding onto North Ann Arbor Street.
Mrs Lynford Arlean Rentschler, 31, of 6809 Austin Rd, Bridgewater, was appointed acting postmistress after the death of former postmistress Mrs Robert Welch. Rentschler has served as Welch’s assistant for five years and will not seek the permanent post. She has prior post office work mainly on holidays and in emergencies. Her husband farms the Austin Road home and they have one child, Diane, age two.
