Merritt Products Co owner Don Geiger says the Saline firm will run out of space soon and seeks a concrete or steel building with at least 5,000 square feet plus a small office. They hoped to move before winter from behind the Sauk Trail Inn.
Five year old Roger Finkbeiner died from internal injuries after a late model station wagon driven by Judith Wise struck a farm wagon on Jordan Road near Braun Road. The boy rode with his grandfather and uncle aboard the wagon. Wise was ticketed for failure to stop within the assured clear distance ahead and no charges beyond that were pursued. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials were directed to the church building fund.
A dance to aid the Cystic Fibrosis fund is set for Saturday August 29 at the American Legion Hall. Kenneth Volz and his Rhythmaires provide music. Tickets available at the Legion Home or from Mrs Gerald Johnson or Mrs Ralph Uphaus. Event runs from 9 p.m. to midnight.
Saline Elementary School invites all parents of elementary students in Saline Area Schools to join the Parents Association. Chairman Mrs. Kenneth Limberg chairs a group with committees led by Mrs. Howard Burr program and others handling hospitality and publicity. Allan Grossman is parliamentary adviser. A meeting for officers and chairs is set for August 27 at Mrs Limberg’s home.
Saline police investigate two forged checks each for 30 dollars cashed in local stores and traced to an out-of-town bank marked forgery. Checks made payable to Rufus Montgomery are allegedly signed by Roy Lee Root.
The Saline Community Fair Board will meet at 8 30 p m Monday in the agriculture room at the High School. This is the last regular meeting before the fair set for September 9 through 12.
City Clerk E J Muir reminds residents petitions for mayor and three council seats must be filed at City Hall by Tuesday September 1. Expiring terms belong to Mayor Jackson T Bennett and Councilmen George Johnson Robert Strohl aka Donald Dechert. Petitions require at least 70 signatures.
Saline city officials report 132 new voters registered before 8 p.m. Monday. City Clerk E. J. Muir says the figure is high for recent years, though final rolls will be known after culling. Most registrations came at the last minute, with 40 recorded between 4 and 8 p.m. on the final day ahead of the September 1 primary. Registration for the November election reopens the day after the primary.
Scouts report Pat Brown of Williamston known as Mr Meat will attend Saline Rotary Club's Thursday noon meeting to discuss steak broiling. Rotarians plan first annual Steak Broil on Sunday August 16 at Farm Council site with tickets from local businesses or Rotary. Also on Thursday scouts report on the National Jamboree at Valley Forge and program chair Alwin Burkhardt.
Representatives from Saline Kiwanis Jaycees and Rotary met to plan a community pool project. They will form boards and committees to study sites size and fundraising with a community poll and questionnaire to guide decisions.
Washtenaw County 4-H Show at the Farm Council Activities Center grows with 1300 youths enrolled. A new tent for the horse project and 30 percent enrollment increases in sheep rabbits and other projects accompany new activities like outdoor meals cook-outs tractor contest and gun safety evaluation. The public show features judging in foods vegetables flowers rabbits poultry livestock horse and dairy with free admission and parking. The Market Livestock Sale Friday at 8 p.m. auctions about 45 steers 25 hogs and 50 lambs all 4-H projects. Ed Gottschalk Howell serves as auctioneer.
Saline clinched at least a share of the Ann Arbor Teague title with a 2-1 eight inning win over Ann Arbor Police to finish regular season 12-2. Pitchers Ron Tucker and Ron Boldt supported Callison who doubled and scored in the final frame. The Saline lineup also defeated Dexter 8-3 and shut out Brighton 3-0 last week.
The Saline Americans Babe Ruth team closed the season with a 9 4 victory over Stockbridge on Wednesday. Starting pitcher Larry Van Buren left after two innings and was relieved by Dave Farrell who shut out Stockbridge. The team totaled 11 hits led by Mickey Davis and Jim Martin with a triple and double. Saline finished 5 5 for a third place, and had previously shut out the Saline Nationals 1 0 in a six inning, darkness shortened non league game.
