A former Saline and Willow Run teacher writes to Mr Gallagher arguing salary levels drive teachers to leave. He cites peers who departed for Midland and Detroit, urging higher state salary equality and better pay to retain and recall teachers.
The Gordon family reunion gathered at Saline Park on Sunday September 9 with fifty eight attendees. Relatives came from Milan Macon Ann Arbor Ypsilanti Caro Royal Oak and Wayne. Officers elected for the next year include President Mrs Lloyd Carey Vice President Bruce Gordon and Secretary Treasurer Mrs Ardis Heininger. The next reunion is set for the first Sunday in August 1946.
Preparations are moving forward for the annual community fair sponsored by the local Future Farmers Chapter. A community fair association formed last year, affiliated with the state group, helps cover most expenses. Arthur Hagen, its president, calls a meeting tomorrow night at 8 at the high school to finalize organization and advance fair plans.
Captain Virgil R. Owens receives the Bronze Star for meritorious service with the Radio Signal officer of HQ XIX corps in Germany. The unit landed in Normandy on D Day and fought through France Belgium Holland the Ruhr to the Elbe with the 29th 30th Infantry Divisions and 2nd Armored Division under First Army and Ninth Army. Owens plans to return to the United States in a few weeks. Mrs. Owens Erma Theurer has worked as an RN at the University of Michigan hospital while he served overseas.
Clarence Hoare program chairman staged sleight of hand proving the hand quicker than the eye at the Saline Rotary Club dinner. The show ran an hour after a dinner meeting and entertained members. President Wiedman proposed starting a similar club in Manchester, a proposal approved unanimously.
The American Bankers Association cites 15,000 national and state banks prepared to fund postwar needs. Bank credit groups totaling over $600 million bolster peacetime lending, with local banks, correspondents, and expert counsel expanding small business access. Treasury data show assets near $82 billion with $77 billion in deposits, confirming banks’ strength as FDIC coverage remains intact.
On a Dan Levert farm near Saline a three and a half acre stand of corn grew unusually tall with stalks reaching 13 feet 8 inches and roots extending nine feet six inches. A large stalk was hauled to town and placed by The Observer office before schoolchildren removed it to avoid blocking the street. Levett estimates plenty of fodder remains for hogs this fall.
A son Richard Frank was born Sunday Sept 9 at St Josephs Mercy in Ann Arbor to Lt and Mrs Paul Davis. Lt Davis is navigator on a B 29 in the Marianas. He says he was over Tokyo Bay on V J Day as the surrender was signed. A letter from son Herbert postmarked Tokyo Bay Sept 2 arrived home. He and Allen Karn expect to meet more often now after a surprise visit. Rev R Hocking attended the Ann Arbor District Methodist Ministerial Association meeting at Belleville.
Miss Mary Ann Groeb and Dwight Carr united in marriage at St Pauls Evangelical and Re formed church on Sunday September 9 at three o clock. Rev Alvin Siemsen officiated with a double ring ceremony in the presence of relatives and a few friends. The bride wore white wool with a black hat and veil and carried a corsage of red roses and white baby mums. Best man Waynard Carr and maid of honor Miss Gertrude Mulder supported, reception for about 35 followed in the church dining room. The couple will reside at 200 West Michigan avenue after a short wedding trip.
Francis Lockwood was appointed to fill the city council seat caused by the resignation of Mark Sugden whose term expires next fall.
Arthur Miller lost the end of his left thumb while operating a vip-saw at the Manchester Handle and Turning Company factory on Monday afternoon.
Herbert A. Reed aged 61 died Saturday at Wayne General hospital. Born March 23 1884 in Wheetland Monroe County NY he was son of Daniel and Martha Reed. He married Jessie Dickson February 18 1907 at Big Rapids and came to Saline from Ypsilanti seven years ago. Survived by wife two daughters Mrs Dean Brandt Saline and Mrs Glen Miller Ypsilanti one brother Henry Reed Kalamazoo two sisters Mrs Martha Manley Dearborn and Miss Clara Reed Kalamazoo and four grandchildren Funeral services were held at 3 30 p m Monday at Lockwood funeral home with Rev RS Hocking officiating burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
The Hertler family held its second annual reunion at Saline park on Sunday afternoon September 2. A 1 o'clock potluck meal followed by ice cream and cake marked the gathering. Clarence Hertler was elected president for the year and Mrs Melvin Armbruster became secretary treasurer. The next reunion will be the first Sunday in September at the local park.
First Sgt. Walter Kieth Skingley has been transferred from Okinawa to Luzon with an amphibious tank battalion engaged in South Pacific island invasions. He has been overseas 15 months and is 1st Sgt. of Headquarters Company. His wife Betty Thomas lives in Saline with her mother Mrs Joseph Thomas.
Willard Otto Bredernitz, Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class U S Naval Reserve, receives the Navy and Marine Corps Medal from the Commandant of the Fifteenth Naval District in Panama on August 18 1945 for heroism on 23 April 1944 in New Guinea. He evacuated wounded, built a fire break, and ferried Army vehicles to prevent loss of critical equipment amid enemy fires.
The Future Farmers chapter held an introduction party for freshmen joining as Green Hands with about 35 attendees including Supt Leo Jensen Principal Jerry Edwards and Earl Culliton. Officers elected were Eldean Finkbeiner president Luther Schaible vice president Aaron Girbach secretary Louis Spiess treasurer Lloyd Finkbeiner reporter Charles Kohler sentinel and Charles Osgood advisor.

Hertler of Saline. Former Saline High School and Cleary Business College graduate. On duty in the Calcutta area.
