Fire destroys upstairs of Saline apartment building
Civil defense exercise canceled by a real fire. At about 6 15 p.m. a blaze at 4910 Saline Ann Arbor Road Lodi Township completely destroyed the upstairs roof and walls of a two story brick building. Damage estimated at 4000. Firemen from Saline and Pittsfield battled the flames for two and a half hours. The Shipley family occupied the second story apartment where the fire started. The other two basement units occupied by Warren and Klager suffered smoke and water damage. Ernest W. Heller Ann Arbor fire chief reported the fire.

Phillip Beswerson 11, son of Stanley Bearerson of Saline, began selling subscriptions on Michigan Avenue. He secured ten new subscriptions in minutes and planned to deliver the Observer to homes at cents per month, offering a new home delivery route with Observer offices and phone number for signups.

Saline Women Injured, One Killed In US-23 Crash
Saline residents Mrs. Ruth Keveling and Mrs. Elizabeth Kuebler suffered extensive injuries in an August 21 crash on US-23 one half mile north of Linwood Road. Mrs. Ruth Spens, driver of the other car, died Friday at Bay City Mercy Hospital. Keveling faces eye cuts, a crushed ankle, and facial injuries. Kuebler has knee fractures, rib breaks, and facial trauma.
