Saline earns a steady industrial foothold as the R and B Tool Company expands. The plant operates 21 workers across two ten hour shifts with 26 machines installed and more to come. Manager Redies reports good progress and expects permanent operations as wartime demand supports continued production.
The Adrian Production Credit Association announces its eighth annual meeting in two sessions on December 11 at Pittsfield Grange hall and December 12 at Lenawee county fairgrounds in Adrian. Directors BE Anderson and E P Hellner stand for term renewals. President Doty to present a year end report and financial review. A lunch follows and afternoon sessions close by 4 p m.
The Saline Woman's Club met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Arthur Heininger presiding. Speaker Mrs. S E Cronson, matron of a Detroit House of Correction girls’ unit, discussed inmate personality and discipline, noting some inmates reform after release while others do not. The group voted to send Miss Jean Carlene Burkhart a bushel of apples for Thanksgiving. The next meeting will be Tuesday December 1 at the Red Cross rooms.
A Thursday noon meeting at The Tavern proceeded without outside speakers due to member absences. Don Ford won a quiz and led the group with Fred Lendrum near second. Alfred Schmid left early for Army duties. Carl A. Curtiss spoke on county draft board issues and fielded many questions. Today is Thanksgiving, so no meeting this week.
Bruce Rider, for 12 years scoutmaster of the Baptist Church Troop in Ann Arbor, was awarded the Silver Beaver Award last night for outstanding service to boyhood. The honor came at the troop's annual Parents' Night and was a surprise as Mr. Rider departs soon for service in the armed forces.
Deer hunters from Saline include C. A. Jordan Clarence Haarer and Ray VanDorn and son as cars with deer line up for ferry boats. Holiday travel shifts with rationing and factory timing. Gas and tires cap crowds while trains stay for soldiers. A large Red Cross presence and renewed subscriptions show community ties across distances.
Julius Hass Sr. died in Detroit Monday November 16 at age 64. He is survived by his wife Christina of Saline, three sons Emil Detroit Rudolph Saline Julius San Diego Calif., four daughters Martha Kline San Diego Calif Hilda Miller Coronado Calif Frieda Schumaier Saline Julia Camille Detroit, five brothers and three sisters, many nieces and nephews, and twelve grandchildren.
An optometrist Dr Frank Gifford offers eye examinations and glasses fittings in Milan Ottawa area. The service runs Saturday from 2 36 to 9 45 PM at the Milan Hotel upstairs marking a tenth year of practice in Milan.
A C Royal writes from Albany Aero Tech about flight training and stunts. He describes a homey “Country Club of the Air” with a swimming pool and good meals, notes his solo flight readiness, and praises instructors with thousands of flight hours. He signs off with luck wishes and a request for snow.
A soldier writes from Army Air Base Colorado Springs after shipping out November 4. He notes missing home news from Saline and his enrollment in airplane mechanics and instruments training. He praises the Army Air Corps and asks to greet friends back home.
War ration book 1 is required for coffee and to obtain book 2 and may cover other commodities. All individuals must register for book 1 by December 15, 1942 with deadlines for babies and discharged patients. Service members surrender books to the local board and deceased holders must return books within 10 days. If convenient, mail books to Mrs Clarence Wurster and call ahead to reduce trips.
To the many friends neighbors and the Ladies Aid of the Federated church we extend heartfelt thanks for the flowers and their kind expressions of sympathy in our bereavement.
Frank N. Isbey, chair of the Michigan War Savings Committee, announced a Dec 1–7 Bond Drive to Remember Pearl Harbor. Citizens are urged to buy an extra War Bond and date it Dec 7 1942, with planes named for communities funded by the drive.
R W Tenny announces 35 scholarships for winter short courses at Michigan State College to allow 35 girls from most Washtenaw county counties to enroll at no cost. First come, first accepted, with Kellogg Foundation funds covering books food lodging and tuition. Applications go through county agents and local officials.
The Eastern Star installs newly elected and appointed officers on Monday November 30 at 8 p m. Installing officers named are Ruby Pasch past grand Adah of the Iowa grand chapter as installing officer Genevieve Gross installing marshal Anna Briggs installing chaplain Bessie Collins installing organist and Ruth Campbell soloist.
Saline General Hospital reports Mr and Mrs Ed Lounsberry welcomed a son born Monday November 23. Mr and Mrs Robert Radenbaugh welcomed a daughter born November 24. Gerald Heath of Milan underwent a minor operation Tuesday morning and returned home Wednesday.
