Speed Exacts Biggest Toll in Michigan Summer
Sergeant Claude Spartell of the Michigan State Police warns that June through August bring the highest highway fatalities due to speeding. A state wide campaign urges drivers to adjust speed to conditions after noting 45 percent of fatal accidents involve speeding. In 1953 Michigan saw over 1900 deaths and 58 000 injuries in 184 000 crashes, with run off road deaths totaling 435. Summer travel is set to rise as daily miles jump to 80 million, increasing exposure to accidents.
