Oxen Draw Plow Better Than Horses Says Local Farmer

Asa Allen, farming 11 miles from Jackson on Meridian road, favors oxen for spring plowing. His pair, a Guernsey and a Brown Swiss both four years old and weighing about 1200 pounds, are trained to gee and haw and harnessed with a long yoke and nose rings. He notes steadier, simpler harnessing and no need for traces or whiffie trees, and prefers them for plowing. Perfectly normal weather is mentioned as rare, per the Manchester Enterprise.
