Corn borer thrives in disked stubble
Michigan State College specialists warn against sowing oats or barley on disked corn stubble as it favors the European corn borer. Warm weather prompts early small grain planting, which protects borers and undermines control efforts. To qualify for Corn-Borer Act compensation, farmers must tidy fields, burn or plow under residues, and burn unshredded stalks by May 1. extra labor compensation tops at $2 per acre for field corn and $1 for sweet corn.
