Saline Teen Canteen Set For Friday Evening Start

An adult advisory group approved plans for a weekly teen canteen for Saline area youths in grades 7 through 12. It opens Friday at 8 p m in the Masonic Hall above Saline Bakery on West Michigan Ave with membership cards required for entry and activities including dancing and games.

Former Saline Man Attends International Rotary Convention

Miss Lulu Fairbanks reports that two former Saline residents attended the International Rotary Convention in Seattle. Leigh D. Townsend, secretary-manager of the Delaware Chamber of Commerce, Ohio, and his wife Muriel Webb Townsend joined 8000 Rotarians and spouses. The couple visited Victoria BC events and joined old Saline friends including Preston W. Mason and Esther and Lulu Fairbanks. Townsend, a Saline High School graduate, is a nephew of the late G. C. Townsend.

Risdon helped lay Capitol Corner Stones in Detroit and Lansing

The article notes Mr. Risdon a devout Mason who in 1823 as Deputy Grand Master laid the cornerstone of Detroit's State Capitol and fifty years later aided the Lansing cornerstone. He died in 1876 at age 89. A 6:00 dinner follows at Federated Church with the annual meeting and officer elections.

Saline Mill Theatre Opens Second Season at Ford Mill

Saline Ann Arbor area youth group presents four plays at the old Ford Mill on U.S. 112 Saline. The season starts June 29 with Noel Coward Private Lives followed by The Guardsman Candida and The Lady's Not For Burning concluding September 4 with Uncle Harry. The 175 seat theatre uses theatre in the round staging with a largely local company including Miss Barbara Hamel producer Ted Heusel new to the group and Nancy Born in the lead.

Open House for Robert Love's Silver Anniversary

Robert Love Sr and Mrs Love of Saline celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with a family dinner and public open house at their apartment 108 West Michigan Ave Saline on Sunday June 27 from 3 00 to 9 00 p m. They wed June 24 1929 in Detroit and have four children three daughters and one son and five grandchildren. Mr Love is Saline chief of police and Mrs Love works at University Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Local Students to Attend National Music Camp at Interlochen

Saline will be represented by Karen Taylor and James Austin at the National Music Camp in Interlochen Michigan this summer. Karen studies piano with Benning Dexter of the University of Michigan staff and will focus on piano. Jim Lillya is a University of Michigan student who will sing in the National High School Choir. Karen holds a $200 Foster Foundation scholarship from the Michigan Youth Symphony and Jim, last year’s winner, returns on a scholarship from the camp.
