Mr and Mrs Burkhardt install four cylindrical tornado shelters at Woodside Trailer Home. Each 20 by 7 by 50 foot tank is lowered into a ground hole and cemented. Shelters include a stair entry, benches, lighting, an emergency door, and a top ventilator.
The Busy Workers 4 H Club met at Mrs. Arthur Lutz on Thursday at 8 30 p m. Officers elected were Mary Sue Gordon president Doris Herter vice president Lydia Robison secretary Nancy Robison treasurer Sue Robison and Kay Gordon reporters The next meeting is set for June 12 at Kim John Marty Hemmingway's restaurant proprietor. Marty Hemmingway entered Unity Hospital Wednesday for observation and a physical check up.
The elementary school held a promotion exercise for 97 sixth grade students last Wednesday. The program featured a sixth grade band, chorus selections, a student council speech by Barbara Hehr, Rev. Robert Richards speaking on The Three Bones, and presentations by Mrs. Barclay and Leon Jensen. The event ended with songs by the class and Mizpah benediction led by John Engelbert.
Mills Swick was taken to St. Joseph Hospital Sunday afternoon as a medical patient.
Kiwanis Club met at Martys Restaurant with Ian Parks of Pittsburg Glass Co presenting a film on glass making. Ross Adair introduced him. Bob Tefft led singing. Bob Harrison presided. Visitors from Tecumseh and Howell joined nine out of town members. Next weeks program features Ralph Keys of Ann Arbor Eastern Kiwanis Club discussing the Forney W. Clement Memorial Foundation.
Washtenaw County Drain Commissioner John H. Flook, 36, announces plans to run for a third term on the Republican ballot. He vows to expand a water conservation program to economize without harming property owners and to protect county drains from misuse by special interests while serving with Navy veteran credentials and local roots.
George Petersen petitions for nomination as sheriff promising an open door to the people of Washtenaw County. A 17 year veteran, Petersen rose from deputy to captain and now seeks the top post with support from townships and cities countywide. He is joined by Undersheriff Charles Shaw who would return to the department if Petersen wins.
Commencement held Thursday evening on Henne Field featured Processional Pomp and Circumstance. Dr Floyd Faust spoke on Fit For Freedom as Elmer Houghston presented diplomas to the class of 1958 with Valedictory by Jo ann Graden and musical numbers led by Kathrene Raus and Joan Austin.
Hollis Carr a gasoline supply truck driver for Washtenaw Farmers Oil Co had a narrow escape when priming an electric pump at Ed Johnson farm caused the pump to burst into flames. The fire department was called at 10 00 Jam Saturday. Carr suffered slight burns to his left hand and moved the truck away from the gas storage tank using a fire extinguisher to extinguish the blaze before responders arrived.

Existing managers include Charles Uphaus Dodgers, D C McCormick Braves, Louis Beleau Indians, Erwin Heiber Tigers, Ken Cole Yankees, Lloyd Bergland Red Sox. Join for a fun filled summer and adopt a team.
Twenty eight Saline High students chosen for scholarship and citizenship begin a week long itinerary across Michigan. They visit Higgins Lake State Park, cross Mackinac Bridge, tour Indian Lake, Huron Mountains, Copper Harbor, Baraga State Park, Marquette Munising and Tahquamenon Falls before returning via Sault Ste. Marie and Lake Charlevoix. Supervisors include Elmer Houghton and several teachers. Mike Bixby chairs the trip.
Mr and Mrs Everett Wolfin celebrate 25 years with an open house hosted by Mr and Mrs Lee Robison Larry Tommy and Terry and Mr Herman Heininger. Guests greet from 2 to 6 p m Sunday June 22 at the Wolfin home 201 West.
Saline Area voters chose three candidates for two three year terms on the Board of Education. Dr. Gordon J. Prout was re elected with 299 votes, Mrs. Bess Tefft won 298, and Frank Brittain received 249 to fill the expiring term. The new board will meet July 11 for reorganization.
At Saline Area High School final assembly, seniors Joan Austin and Sarah Woods honored in music. bowling team members Patricia McDougall Charlotte Toth Patricia Teachout Bonnie Fitz receive trophies. cheerleaders seniors Patricia Teachout Patricia McDougall Martha Faust Gall Burmeister honored. Forensic key awarded to Paula Strabic James Struble Marilyn Kempf Karen Girbach. Frances Visel receives two year pin. Letters in spring sports awarded by William Bailey Howard Hill and Mark DeLay.
A group of fathers and friends gathered at the high school to build a baseball diamond for the Little League team. Under Art Michalke’s chairmanship they coordinated equipment donations from Alwin Gross and others, City of Saline workers, and land alterations by Henry Orisby, with Lloyd Steiner supplying sand and topsoil. Volunteers are urged to contribute time on weekday evenings and Saturdays.
Ann Arbor attorney Morris E. Popkins announced his bid for the Democratic nomination for Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney in the August 5 primary. He urged staff consolidation to improve efficiency while maintaining functions. Popkins, 49, born in Ann Arbor, educated at local schools, Tulane Law, practiced in the Thumb, worked for Sperry, and now resides in Ann Arbor Township with wife and daughter.
A seven pound six ounce baby girl named Brenda Kay was born to Mr and Mrs Don Trinklein of Frankenmuth. The mother is the former Marilyn Jantz of Saline.
Saline hosts Old Fashioned Days June 19 20 and 21 inviting residents to wear vintage clothing from celluloid collars Gibson Girl hats and beater shoes. Merchants offer special savings during the event encouraging neighborhood participation and nostalgia.
Saline police reported multiple break-ins during Tuesday night or Wednesday dawn. Russell's Marathon on East Michigan Ave had a rear window smashed and a small cash amount taken. Hoeft station nearby had an attempted entry with pry marks. Graf's Gulf on West Michigan lost cigarettes after a back door was forced open.
Chief Earl Kirby investigated a 3 10 p m accident on the Saline Milan road involving a 1955 Chevrolet station wagon driven by Glen Ray Williams and ten year old Danny B Kennedy. Danny suffered bruises. Williams cited damage to the car and bicycle.
