MYF Ice Cream Social Planned For Wed July 21

The Youth Fellowship of Saline Methodist Church sponsors an ice cream social on the church lawn Wednesday July 21 at 7:00 p.m. Public invited. Mrs Lena Davenport is general chairman. A country store, soft drinks, hot dogs, and a fish pond will be featured.

DUI Arrests in Michigan Reflect July Dates

Police reports show Adam N. Brinck of Bridgewater was arrested July 11 for liquor DUI and arraigned July 12 in Ann Arbor, pleading guilty and facing a $50 fine and $50 costs or 90 days in jail. Elisha Smith of Dundee was arrested July 10 for drunk and disorderly conduct, arraigned July 12 in Ann Arbor, pleading guilty and fined $15 or 10 days in jail.

Sharon Starling Elected To Office In Detroit Conference

Sharon Starling of the Saline Methodist Youth Fellowship was chosen Chairman of Christian Outreach for the Detroit Conference at the Youth Assembly held June 26 to July 3 at Camp Michigamme. She earlier won a second term as Secretary on the Ann Arbor District Cabinet, resigning that post to serve as Conference officer.

Local Man Places 2nd In Golf Tourney

Cecil Albertson of Saline finished second in the hole in one contest in Ann Arbor hosted by the Optimists Club. His 1 foot 4 inch putt on the 16th hole at the Municipal course trailed a 1 foot 1 inch winner. Proceeds support the Underprivileged Fund run by the Ann Arbor Optimists Club.

Feeman's Station Robbed. About $40 Stolen

Howard Red Feeman's Shell service station at 199 W. Michigan Avenue was broken into early Wednesday morning. Police estimate the theft occurred between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. A rear window was pried open and the burglar removed cash from a drawer, leaving pennies in the register.

Meyer Named President of General Telephone Michigan Branch

Louis H. Meyer will become President and a Director of General Telephone Company of Michigan, effective August 1, 1954, succeeding Frederic E. Norris who moves to General Telephone Corporation in New York. Meyer has led multiple General Telephone entities in New York and previously served as General Auditor of Black River Telephone. Michigan now operates 95,000 telephones across 78 central offices with major exchanges in Muskegon Ludington Coldwater Sturgis Three Rivers Grand Ledge Milford Tecumseh Whitehall and Manistique. Walkers Lease Schild Building Expansion at 105 Michigan Ave

Mr and Mrs Alfred Walker proprietors of the Walkers 5c to $1.00 Store have leased the Tony Schild store next to their 105 Michigan Ave location. The building will be remodeled with an archway linking the structures to expand space and better serve customers. They purchased 105 Michigan Ave from Fred Schmid on June 1.

Annual School Election Elects Two Trustees in Sa line Area

The Sa line Area Schools held its annual election on Monday June 12 from 10:00 a m to 5:00 p m to fill two expiring trustee terms. Carl Burmeister and Alwin R Burkhardt were reelected for three years amid low turnout with 41 ballots cast. At the meeting 8:30 p m in the school gym reports were read and the budget for next year was approved. A motion passed to keep polls open until 8:00 p m at future elections to allow more voters.

Drilling for Oil Reaches Saline Area Farm

Drilling for oil near Saline has reached 2800 feet on the Edward Filsinger farm west of Saline. Three weeks into the operation there is no definite oil discovery yet, though the Filsingers remain optimistic. The activity draws many onlookers to watch the drilling.

Saline City Bond Vote On Sewage System Upgrade

City of Saline voters will decide August 3 1954 on borrowing 180000 dollars for a sewage disposal system upgrade including a plant intercepting sewers and extensions. The project cost is estimated at 360000 dollars with the remainder covered by revenue bonds funded through water sewer charges. Only qualified electors taxed in Saline may vote.

A. E. Hagen owner of the Saline Hatchery sells part interest to Amstutz Hatcheries at Celina Ohio. Upon papers the hatchery becomes Amstutz Hatcheries Inc with Hagen remaining majority stockholder and manager. The Amstutz family own multiple hatcheries in several states and will broaden access to superior breeding stock benefiting local poultrymen.

Saline Township Adopts Zoning and Chronicles Courthouse Work

Saline Township passed a zoning ordinance to preserve its agricultural character and documented the Washtenaw County Courthouse project milestones from 1948 to 1955. Groundbreaking occurred October 14 1953 with a 40 percent completion note and a brief delay due to a carpenter walk-out.

Rotary Notes of Saline Club Meeting Discuss Railroads

Saline Rotary Club met July 8 at the Saline Hotel with new president Gerald Coe presiding. Patrick E. Hackett of the Michigan Railroad Association spoke on rail transport and warned of growing government control. the talk noted New York Central paid 116 031 to Washte naw County for taxes. Honorary memberships were given to Rev. Benish and Alvin Siemsen, with Cecil Albertson and Fred Yoakum added as members.
