Corn Farmers Advised On Plantings At MSU Week
Michigan State University soilsman R L Cook told a Farmers Week session that continuous corn planting can work on some fields but requires liberal fertilization. The main need is nitrogen with about one pound per bushel expected yield, plus 40 to 100 pounds per acre of phosphate and potassium depending on soil and tests. Rotation on livestock farms can leave fertility that lowers nitrogen needs, especially after alfalfa or manure. A starter of 200 pounds of 5-20-10 or 5-26-20 per acre may cut need for potassium and phosphate.
