The Treasury Department announces sale of automobile tax stamps at post offices and revenue offices. The first sticker costs $2.09 and lasts until July 1, with annual $5 stickers thereafter. Stamps require cash, money orders, or certified checks, no personal checks accepted.
Saline Rotary Club luncheon featured City Attorney J J Kraisman who explained state traffic laws and damage suits. He noted courts’ varying definitions of carelessness and answered audience questions. Guests included Perry D Riddick Grant Marshall H Emerson Wolning. Marshall reported on Washtenaw Livingston Boy Scout council meeting. An evening for Rotary Annsexcitement was proposed. Field Museum economist botanist to study upper Orinoco jungles in Venezuela for a year.
A Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue will be at our bank on Jan 27 to assist taxpayers in preparing their returns at no charge. File promptly to avoid penalties and interest. Required if gross income is 750 or more for single or married not living with spouse, or 1500 or more for married and living with spouse.
Saline Hatchery honored breeding stock owners with a banquet in the Saline Methodist church dining hall. Prof. C A Card of Michigan State College spoke on graded eggs and advertising while Dr. E S Wisener discussed poultry diseases. Arthur Hagen introduced attendees and community members sang led by Chelsea hosts Paul Niehaus.
The Saline council met in the council rooms on Monday eve ning January 12 with Mayor Gross presiding. Present were Lambarth Haarer Schroen and Cole. Minutes from the prior meeting were approved. Attorney Jack Kraizman drafted an ordinance on street parking published in The Saline Observer January 15 1942. Bills totaling 1719 66 were read and approved for payment. Reports show heavy volunteer signups for civilian defense at the Armory in Ann Arbor with over 1000 dollars in offers from the city by Jan 10. Registrants span ages 9 to 78 and include women, professionals, and factory workers. Training and placement will follow, with courses in first aid nursing canteen work and nutrition offered through Red Cross and welfare groups to support home front defense.
Volunteers for Civilian Defense in Saline and vicinity are asked to register at the city hall on Thursday or Friday Jan 22 and 23 from 2 until 8 pm and Saturday Jan 24 from 10 am until 8 pm.
Saline General Hospital reports Maynard Bird of Britton had tonsils removed Saturday morning. Miss Joanne Levlett had an emergency appendicitis operation Thursday night and is doing nicely. Miss Margaret Smith, a hospital night nurse, had an emergency appendicitis operation Sunday night and is satisfactorily.
Saline prepares for a clash with Milan as Saline aims to build on recent wins and grow this season. Milan high school, noted as a strong cage team, travels to Saline’s gym for a pivotal matchup amid Saline’s improving form and a hot Reds squad.
Saline High school basketball broke into the league win column by defeating Chelsea 36 to 27 in the local gym. Don Kelsey led with 15 points, Dale Hirth 9, Russell Beargs 7, while Chelsea’s Policht scored 11. Chelsea dropped to a 3rd loss as Saline pulled away in the second half. A junior reserve game had Saline edging Chelsea 17 to 16.
Eye examinations and glasses fitted every Saturday from 2 30 to 9 30 P M at the Milan Hotel office. Dr Frank Gifford, an optometrist in Toledo, marks the ninth year of practice.
