The group gathers every morning at Martys Restaurant at 9 for discussion on minor issues and local business gossip. Participants include Saline businessmen such as Milton Hartman and Lee Robison, with chatter about parking meters and former Jowans Frank Deede and Raymt.
Mr and Mrs George Conner and their four children will leave Saline January 1 for Arizona to establish a new home near Tucson or Phoenix. Conner, a builder for about 15 years, has lived in the area all his life. Daughters Carolyn and Arlene will stay behind, the former in Washington DC and the latter with her husband Dan Larsen after their January 11 marriage. Joyce and George will accompany the parents.
In Too Late Falls Village Connecticut Postmaster Martin M J Murray retires after 23 years of service and receives a new roll top desk the same day.
The Washtenaw County Health Department and Washtenaw County Veterinary Medical Association will run 13 rabies vaccination clinics from January 8 to January 30. Fees include licenses and vaccines, with late increases after March 1. Clinics accept residents from all areas, with schedules listed by township and date.
The Harold Socks construction crew began work Monday morning to install a porcelain front at the Saline Food Center. Bob Leonard says the new front and fluorescent light fixtures will be completed in about three weeks, updating Saline’s main street.
The Sa Observer Milan Leader and Manchester Enterprise announce a change to classified rates. Ads will be charged 3 cents per word with a 40 cent minimum, with no extra charge for cross-publication in any of the three papers.

Adult farmer classes begin January 13 1958 at 8 30 p m in Saline High School Vo Ag Dept led by Alton Ealy with weekly meetings for about 10 weeks. This marks the third year of the program funded by Smith Hughes Funds and no enrollment fee. Farmers may enroll at the meeting or call Mr Ealy with name if they cannot attend.
Jerry Graf marks eight and a half years in Saline with a grand opening of a Gulf service station on West Michigan Avenue. He began in the business as a child and worked for his father before running his own shop. The new location hosts a two day opening on Friday and Saturday.
Sports editor and WOIA Radio sports director Tom N Johnston joins the Saline Observer Milan Leader and The Manchester Enterprise staff. He brings years of sports writing broadcasting USAF experience including Stars and Stripes Far East and Okinawa roles. He aims to deliver strong local coverage.
A scroll signed by over 500 boys and girls he taught reads appreciation for his untiring efforts patience and understanding in giving the gift of swimming and a glimpse of what is meant by the American spirit. The document bears fingerprints of young students as a sign of their thanks.
A hit and run damaged a parked 1958 Ford owned by Doug Gregory at 106 N. Ann Arbor St. The incident occurred Friday January 3 at 8 30 p m as a car traveling south from McKay St on N Ann Arbor St at about 60 mph struck the vehicle. Damages were estimated at 102 dollars and the other vehicle fled the scene.
The Washtenaw County Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting with the Washtenaw County Board of Road Commissioners on Wednesday January 15 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be at the County building in Ann Arbor and all members are urged to attend.
The Saline area welcomed WOIA as it formally opened on Sunday with a 3 to 5 p.m. dedication in the studio. Mayor Henry Leutheuser, Mayor Eldersveld, Judge Breakey Jr., and Rep. George Sallade attended, plus a taped greeting from Governor Williams and a music program by Saline High School students. The building at 3000 Brassow Rd. was shown to guests, marking the culmination of plans begun in 1952 by the Bixby family who formed the Saline Broadcasting Corporation in 1955. WOIA will broadcast on 1290 kilocycles daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a Thought for the Day and a women’s program starting January 8.
Saline businessmen urged residents to support the local March of Dimes campaign led by Mrs. Everette Esch and volunteers. A full page ad highlights continued care for preterm babies and plans include a Jaycees breakfast and dinner at Martys Restaurant on Jan 26 to benefit the drive. The county goal is $44,900, with $2,852 raised last year.
Juanita and Bob Leonard of the Saline Food Center announce they will leave on Saturday for their first vacation in five years. They plan to travel to nearby resorts and return with stories of their trip.
Carl Anderson aged 42 slid on ice Sunday morning on Easton Webber Rd and crossed into Ann Arbor Rd, hitting Leo Bjjerke driving a 1958 Oldsmobile. Both drivers escaped injury. Anderson’s 1952 Chevrolet totaled. Oldsmobile damage over $300. Investigating officer Jim Leyleit.
The Washtenaw County Farm Bureau moved last Friday from its Ann Arbor location to the former Mills School building on the Ann Arbor Saline Road. The move follows plans to raze the old site for the Ann Arbor Bank expansion program.
Mrs. Leonard and her husband will take a week's vacation visiting Paris Arkansas, the home town of Mrs. Leonard, marking their first trip in five years. They plan to travel by car and visit points in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
