Public Health Warns Against Complacency Since 1873
Dr. Albert E. Heustis notes 1958 Michigan health progress but warns against dropping immunity. Polio cases rose to 530 in 1958 from 121 in 1957, and vaccine protection gaps remain. Diphtheria and typhoid decline, yet sewage treatment and sanitation demand attention as private systems lag in the southern Lower Peninsula. Public births exceed 200,000 yearly, TB remains costly, and teen behavior shifts raise venereal disease concerns. Aging Michiganders demand expanded home care and nursing services.
