Goodwill Industries plans a pickup in Saline tomorrow Thursday December 11. Call Mrs Vera Burkhart at Saline HA 9 7019 to arrange pickup. The city and Chamber of Commerce offered free parking with meters covered by paper bags as a holiday gesture.
Saline High School and Junior High Band present their annual Winter Concert in the high school auditorium at 8 o clock tonight. The program features Christmas selections and LeRoy Andersons A Christmas Festival. Junior High performs Drums and Bells March Handel pieces and Deep River Rhapsody. Senior High showcases a trumpet trio Carnival Variations and Cele brated Air Bach Universal Judgement. New 70 piece Senior Band and 60 piece Junior Band directed by Arthur Katterjohn with aid from Bob Wojciak and Messrs Froseth and Schneider.
Saline's Robi gan Johnson Co becomes H L Johnson Co after Howard Johnson buys Lee Robison and keeps the same staff and service facilities. Established 30 plus years, the firm sells International Harvester farm implements Frigidaire appliances RCA Victor TVs radios and Hi Fi. Johnson born in Quincy Illinois moved to Saline January 1948 lives with Ruth and three children Pat Mike and Gary.
The Saline Observer reports a church missionary offering box, labeled Barbara, left under flooring in the newspaper printshop during remodeling. The box was discovered by carpenters. its end pried open and contents missing, raising questions about who Barbara is and who stole the money.
WKAR radio reports the university receives the National Safety Council Public Interest Award for four consecutive years of exceptional farm safety service and outreach in Michigan.
Mrs Fred Sheldon of Whittaker won a 1959 two door Ford sedan with radio and heater in a Detroit area contest run October 17 to 19. Her card was dropped in a box at Gene Butman Ford Sales Ypsilanti along with thousands of others from Detroit area outlets.
The Saline Observer reports a busy week with relatives of Rev. Robert Richards of the First Methodist Church in Great Britain visiting. About 50 copies of a reform edition circulated containing news of a family tragedy. References to Morris, Crystal Falls, Rockford, Saginaw, Celina, and Kenni am appear in scattered notes.
Washtenaw County Planning Commission and County Board Planning Committee will meet at 8 p.m. December 17 in room 306 of the County building in Ann Arbor. Director Robert D Carpenter announced the agenda includes subdivision review policy the 1959 preliminary budget county organization and future use of county farm land.
Michigan State University researchers at the Upper Peninsula experiment station found corn a viable supplement to hay for dairy cows, performing comparably to a oats hay blend in sustaining production.
Cranbrook School Bloomfield Hills Mich offers scholarships up to 1500 dollars to boys eligible for entrance into grades seven to eleven in September 1959. Candidates must have above average academic record good citizenship leadership and proven financial need. Applications due March 1 to Headmaster Cranbrook School Bloomfield Hills Mich. The school enrolls about 380 boys from the US and several foreign countries and has a 30 year history of financial aid.
Philip Big Boy McGee of Detroit and Richard Green were arrested in Saline by state police and federal narcotics agents. A pound of heroin valued at about 84 thousand dollars was found under the back seat of their Cadillac. McGee faced two narcotics counts in federal court with a 15 thousand dollar bond set, while Green was held as a material witness on a 500 dollar bond. A deer hunting prize of twenty five dollars was awarded to Melvin Armbruster of Bridgewater for a 180 pound buck, shot during the season near Keweenaw Peninsula.
The Saline Junior Chamber of Commerce plans a Saturday broadcast on WOIA from a mobile studio at Michigan Ave and Ann Arbor St. Jaycees will handle local and state news with special features, include exclusive Santa Claus interview, 10:30 to 11:30 AM Top Ten music, and hourly five minute newscasts with half hour news flashbacks. Proceeds fund local Jaycee projects such as the Christmas home decoration contest and Teen Age Road-eo.
Michigan State University hosts Farmers Week February 2 to 6 1959 featuring the theme Health Man Plants and Animals. Ralph Tenney directs the five day program with research scientists professors and extension specialists presenting across six campus buildings and additional sites. Thousands of Michigan farmers families and urban residents are invited to attend.
Commerce announces a Saline area home Christmas display contest judged by local Jaycees on Monday night December 22 from 7 to 10 PM. Eligible homes must be lighted, with entries not requiring forms. The Junior Chamber of Commerce will award a permanent plaque to the winner and the paper will announce results next issue. Residents urged to participate to boost holiday appeal.
Relatives of Rev. Robert Richards of the First Methodist Church in North Wales request copies of the Saline Observer edition. This marks the first such international inquiry since the paper’s 1880 founding, with the audience traced to Rhoslanerchrugog in Great Britain.

The Saline American Legion Post announced a gala New Year’s Eve party at the Legion Hall. Tickets go on sale soon. The Christmas Dance with the Kenny Volz orchestra is scheduled for Saturday December 13 at the Legion Hall and all members and friends are invited.
Two German exchange students attending Saline High School will address the Kiwanis Club at Martys Restaurant Elmer Houghton. The Kiwanis hosts will present a two hour show Saturday afternoon featuring Walt Disney cartoons and shorts while parents shop Saline merchants during Shopping Days. The free show begins promptly at 2 pm.
The Elementary Room Mothers met at the school Monday evening with Mrs. Rolland Sutton presiding. The program covered reading instruction across grades with teachers demonstrating methods and plans by Mrs. Marian Barclay.
Jim Jedele was elected President of the Junior FFA at a Monday noon high school meeting. Offficers include Jim Guenther Vice President Neil Bohnett Secretary and Joe Riggs Treasurer with Ralph Diable Sentinel and Bill Schettenheim Reporter.
Eastern Michigan College officials said students with below B average in high school may gain admission if they pass tests showing college level ability. They reviewed standards with high school principals and business reps across southeastern Michigan, emphasizing extensive testing.

The Court of Honor will promote Jim Strait and Rob Merchant to first class while Jody Burkhart Hal Ceronsky Randy Harms and Bruce Uphaus advance to second class.
